5ft 8in draft in French canals

Just joined here. I usually sail out in the ocean but after 50 years thinking of buying a boat that I've seen for sale in Scotland. Is it possible to cruise the French canals to the Med in this boat. I will eventually sail it back here to Australia so I don't want a power boat and this particular boat has my eye. It's an 8 metre..... wood of course. I like a challenge. Thanks John

Hi John,

5" 8in = 1,73m could get problems, particular in summer. Secure should be 1,60m = 5" 3in

cheers

Thanks for the reply. The trip would not be till late September and I guess that would be no better. Have yet to decide on the best route. I would really like to do this trip.

Re: 5ft 8in draft in French canals

Locks in France are built in measures of contructor Freycinet
38,5 m length und 5 m wide, channel 1,80 m draft,3,50 m bridge clearence -
but often channels are muddy and if to less water it will be flooded by administration. So the problem will be bridge clearance.
Best time to go is spring after snow melting.

If you can't make the french channels work for you the Rhine/Danube route is deeper AFAIK.

The boat only has a 20 hp volvo. Not sure what speed it makes but it does not have a lot of beam. It does seem from what I've heard so far that it is possible if certain facts are taken into account. So, I am still interested in this boat. Thanks for the replies so far.
