@ Pelagic:

Here is a link to an article from Australian ABC today: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-05-...olve/100173318

In brief, it suggests that not only is it okay to mix and match, but that it may also have less side effects and leads to a higher level of antibodies.

Re: Vaccination Decisions in Philippines. Mix or Match?

I'm not a doctor but there are a number of reasons that I would stick to the prescribed 2nd dose rather than mixing and matching vaccines, especially the adenovirus based vaccines (and I wouldn't get a vaccine if I had already recovered from the virus):

1) When you receive a vaccine that uses an adenovirus vector to deliver it's payload into your body, you generate antibodies to the payload (Covid) and to the vector (adenovirus). There are only 3 primary types of of adenovirus variants used as vectors for vaccines, gene therapy, cancer treatments, etc. If you develop an immune response to these adenoviruses you potentially limit the future effectivity of treatments that rely on the adenovirus to deliver it's payload.

2) Adenovirus based vaccines have a higher chance of clotting related issues (albeit very rare). Adenovirus based vaccines replicate the Covid spike proteins in the nucleus of target cells versus the cytosol for mRNA based vaccines. The nucleus is not as optimized to replicate an RNA based virus and can cause spike protein variants to be created that generate an inflammatory response. Once again, this is rare.

3) Every type of Covid vaccine carries a different payload that tries to mimic the spike protein that Covid uses. There is a potential (unproven) risk of triggering an auto-immune condition associated with every exposure to a different foreign antigen. This is called molecular mimicry or antigenic cross reactivity. Molecular mimicry is when an antibody that your body created to fight a foreign antigen also attacks healthy tissues in your body creating an auto-immune condition. Roughly 5% of the population suffers from auto-immune related conditions. Weigh this against the fact that there are only a handful of proven instances of auto-immune conditions that are triggered by known virions. I think we are at a bloodletting level of understanding with cross reactivity but it's one of the reasons that I wouldn't treat vaccines like a sampler platter.

Great post NP Campbell and believe it or not, I actually understood the concern, .
....which is why , so far, they are only talking about mixing vaccines with the same architecture

Re: Vaccination Decisions in Philippines. Mix or Match?

Germany, as the texts are in English I try to translate:

Permitted:
Comirnaty (Biontech/Pfizer),
COVID-19-Vaccine (Moderna Biotech),
Vaxzevria (before: „COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca“)
Covid-19 Vaccine Janssen from Janssen-Cilag / Johnson und Johnson.

March 30, 2021 the German Health Minister Conference decided all AstraZeneca vaccinated should receive 12 weeks later a mRNA vaccine (Biontech or moderna) if they are younger than 60 Years old. If you insist on a second shot with Astra you may have it after consulting a doctor.

German study shows more side effects on mixed vaccinations

Seems we need lifetime (of Covid19) vaccination anyway, as EU does not buy AstraZeneca anymore, next shots will be mRNA and/or dead vaccines that will be released soon. Some friends, doctors, are waiting for them, this is actually the "old style" of vaccines.

I & Admiral received our first shots AstraZeneca in AUSTRIA, second shot will be 12 weeks later, AstraZeneca again, probably our government bought to much of this cheap stuff

Covid-19 Vaccine Janssen from Janssen-Cilag / Johnson und Johnson, only for elderly people above 60 because of Thrombosis cases

FYI only, no warranty, no advice

Listened to an interview with a specialist in the field just yesterday and she indicated that it seems to be the gold standard for the vaccines. But again I would think asking a doctor specifically about your case would be ideal.

Re: Vaccination Decisions in Philippines. Mix or Match?

Canada has issued guidance on mix/match which is probably the same as the previouly cited articles):

https://www.businessinsider.com/coro...against-2021-6

Summary:

Quote:
Preferred: Pfizer (first shot) and Pfizer (second shot); or Moderna (first shot) and Moderna (second shot).

Acceptable: Pfizer and Moderna; or Moderna and Pfizer.

Equally acceptable: AstraZeneca and AstraZeneca; AstraZeneca and Moderna; or AstraZeneca and Pfizer.
