The Reality of Living in Australia and Covid

A friend of mine and his father who came down to WA from NT were stopped covid tested and told to self isolate until the results were in - 5-6 days!!!!

They stuck the swab so far up his fathers nose that it caused a very large nose bleed!

Both of them have had BOTH vaccination shots and when they told them this they were told that you can still catch and spread Covid even if vaccinated and that they still must isolate until the results come in.

What sort of Mickey Mouse world (sorry Country) do we live in where HEALTHY (Vaccinated) People are locked up?

As for 5-6 days to get the results back, well that is truly taking the pi$$.

Re: The Reality of Living in Australia and Covid

Not sure what your point is?i
Is it the nose bleed he said he got? Or the need for a short quarantine to protect you and your WA mates.
FYI, WA has no Covid cases because of the hard line. It’s standard practice around the world to be tested and isolate till test comes back negative. A vaccinated person can still infect others albeit at about 50% as compared to an unvaccinated person. You should be thankful that they can come and visit you. Come over to the eastern states and then you might realise what Mickey Mouse means.

Mmmmm. Viva la revolution. Guess that says it all.

Think about the millions who’ve been swabbed worldwide, Then consider how you hear about every single one that has a bad experience.

Because anatomy and pain tolerance vary, there’s no way of knowing if you’re likely to have a bad experience.

Although fairly rare, some people may develop a nosebleed after undergoing a nasal swab to test for COVID-19. Most of the time, nosebleeds caused by COVID-19 are minor. In rare cases, medical attention may be necessary.

These rare nosebleeds might occur if the swab irritated and broke the surface of the mucosa, This might be more likely in really dry climates, at altitude, and if the person has a very narrow nose, a deviated septum, has had extensive sinus surgery, or is on blood thinners, etc.
Poor technique [inadeqate training] may also be a factor.

A few small studies have found evidence that people with COVID-19 experience nosebleeds more frequently than people without COVID-19, but more research is needed to fully understand the link.

“Epistaxis as a marker for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 status – a prospective study” ~ by MH Hussain, M Mair, and P Rea
The researchers concluded that nosebleeds might be a symptom of coronavirus infection, but larger studies are needed to confirm this.

“Features of anosmia in COVID-19" ~ by T. Klopfenstein et al
11 percent of a group of 114 people with COVID-19 had nosebleeds.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7162775/

“Approaching Otolaryngology Patients During the COVID-19 Pandemic” ~ by Chong Cui et al
In a group of 20 people with COVID-19 who needed to see an ear, nose, throat specialist, 30 percent (6 people) had nosebleeds.

FWIW: I'd be more concerned by the country's climate change record [among worst in developed world].
Australia is one of only two countries in the G20 not implementing or planning any sort of carbon price scheme, one of only four without a national policy to increase renewable energy and ranks last in cutting greenhouse gas emissions from transport
The Climate Transparency report *, an assessment by 14 organisations released before the recent virtual G20 summit, said Australia ranked in the bottom bracket in every climate policy area considered except one.
* “Ambitious climate action through country comparisons”

Australia ➥ https://www.climate-transparency.org...-2020-WEB2.pdf

Canada doesn't rate all that well, either.

What part of stay at home is difficult to understand?
Delta is about 1000 times more infectious than the alfa variant.
The alternative is to let it rip if people prefer to ignore simple rules to prevent spread.

Re: The Reality of Living in Australia and Covid

All I can say is GOOD. Sorry for a nose bleed but the rest, is a very good thing. I've been vaccinated and I do NOT go into public places without a good mask. I am terrified by the fact the local hospitals can not handle the case load and ICU units are using a WAITING LIST.

Covid KILLS, every single day. If there is a plus in it all it's that the deniers and anti-vaccination crowd seem to be the hardest hit...

Be glad I am not running it all because if you chose to not get vaccinated you would not be admitted and allowed to waste a hospital bed...

Re: The Reality of Living in Australia and Covid

Been vaccinated a long time and have to test before every flight at work to selected countries.

Swabs are mid nasal...we've had crew that had nose bleed issues with certain aggressive testers. Be glad you're not in China where you may be subject to an anal swab.

Re: The Reality of Living in Australia and Covid

A wait of 5-6 days is a long time...

A family member got slightly sick, got tested and the wait was a couple of days for the results, which seems reasonable. Test was negative.

Another family member got sorta sick, got tested, twice, and is positive, even though they have been vaccinated.

The Dutch say the current variant is four times easier to catch than other variants.

Later,
Dan

This is a boaters forum . Not a "how life sucks under COVID blog".

Let's keep it that way.

There are plenty of other places for people to vent frustrations other than this forum.

I come here to brighten up my day, not be dragged down by the daily BS.

My two cents

Re: The Reality of Living in Australia and Covid

Can we please just stick to boat issues!

Any of us who don't live under a rock now know that even if we have been fully vaccinated we can still transmit Covid 19. So, yeah, I get that testing still needs to take place even with an occasional nose bleed. I'm headed to Greece a two weeks to sail and I will probably be tested three times on the way and, yes, I have been fully vaccinated. It's the ani-vaccers I have my beef with.

Re: The Reality of Living in Australia and Covid

Yeah, this has not much to do with boating and cruising except it's a worldwide clusterf*ck.

As far as pain from a PCR (small swab going into sinuses not the larger swab around the bottom of your nose) it is very simple. Nurse taught me this when I related my 1st PCR test. Open your mouth as wide as you can. This opens the sinuses and it just slips in. Barely feel a thing.

And for the government in WA I say, Good on ya mate. Wish we had politicians who understood what their job is in my country

A preprint research paper [1], by researchers in Peru, describes a new variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), known as the Lambda variant (C.37). The Lambda variant was first reported in Lima, Peru, in December 2020, and from April 2021, nearly all the coronavirus infections in the country are caused by it.

The Lambda variant has seven mutations in the spike gene and a deletion in the ORF1a gene. The deletion of the ORF1a gene has been observed in other variants of concern, including Alpha (B.1.1.7), Beta (B.1351), and Gamma (P.1).

Gamma is currently dominant in Central and South America, but Lambda's high transmission rate may soon overtake it.

The study authors write [1]:
"... Expansion of C.37 has occurred in South America in the presence of hundreds of circulating lineages and VOCs Alpha and Gamma, suggesting increased transmissibility of this lineage. However, additional epidemiological data and analyses are needed to assess its transmission, virulence, and immune escape properties ...."

So, you don't like Australia? You could always go somewhere else. How about Afghanistan? I am sure the Taliban won't subject you to a PCR nasal swab! You poor thing.
