Sailing in Times of Covid

Here's something a local sailor recently posted in the interest of promoting a group sailing event:

"COVID might be tough, but it's not as tough as us Sailors!"

I am in a high risk group (who isn't) and totally disagree.

Not too many worries if they're all singlehanders; or, if they're all one family, and they isolate at anchor. It's when one mixes with a lot of people, who have contact with children that one is most at risk. Risk can be somewhat limited by mask wearing, because it gives others some protection if the one wearing the mask is non-symptomatic, but infectious.

Only real “at risk group” would be most of our bank accounts


Crate, out of my studying this disease, there has been zero confirmed information out about it being airborne, it’s spread via respiratory droplets, how would a asymptomatic person spread it outside of intimate contact?

It has recently been proved to be airborne.

For the foreseeable future you would be wise to only use cardboard cutout crew

If you must take on real crew, for a passage or whatnot , follow the rules

Socially isolate the crew on deck , forward of the mast , for 14 days

296 scientists from around the globe, sending an open letter to the World Health Organization in June, demanding that they amend their statements....and then WHO doing so, is enough proof for me.

That doesn't mean it drifts around for weeks in the great outdoors, but it does mean it can travel in a room further that droplets.

What standard of proof are you looking for?

This was originally posted in an effort to get a local meetup group back into sailing together. Major point seemed to be: sailors are so tough and
are Covid immune. NO, fair winds or not.

The good news is that the mortality rate is pretty low. The other good news is that the vast majority of people have no symptoms and the overwhelming majority have no or mild symptoms.

The risk group basically consists of those with underlying conditions. If you are obese, if you are out of shape, if you have diabetes, if you smoke, if you have leukemia, etc. then you are at risk and naturally, need to protect yourself.

It is serious and those at risk need to take precautions.

I agree with most of what ArmyDave says but there have been many cases of severe/deadly Covid-19 among young people with no predisposing illnesses. It appears to be a bit of a genetic crapshoot as to how any individual is going to respond to infection. Hopefully all the researchers working on this will begin to tease out the mechanisms at work here.
The severity of the disease once contracted appears to be dose dependent so wearing a mask may protect you as well as those around you. Not a political thing, just common sense.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there us indeed valid research showing the virus is indeed airborne. Aerosolized. Microscopic airborne droplets that can circulate very easily in ac environments. Such as big box stores etc. The 6' rule is bogus. Masks if they are N95 help. But your eyes are portals for the Aerosolized virus to enter.

Add to this bad news. The virus has mutated. The new mutation has changed its outer crowns to slithering tentacles that are used by the virus to pierce the human host cell. It is reported in scientific circles that this new mutated version of the virus is at least 10 times more contagious than what we saw earlier in the year. This is not over by any stretch of the imagination. In many respects we are at the beginning of a far more contagious stage two.
