Possible Return to FLA from Rio Dulce in June?

Hello,

I just joined this forum, a novice sailor yes but really a stranded American waiting out the C19 situation in Antigua, Guatemala. I am trying to look--in this site and elsewhere--whether it would be possible--assuming international travel restrictions ease by say end of May-- for a charter to be found from Rio Dulce, Guatemala to Florida, taking some stops along the way, sharing the charter with a handful of others? I have almost No idea how much something like that could cost but I have real doubts about the wisdom of even trying to rebook what would be a crowded flying tubes to return to USA anytime reasonably soon and I thought asking this forum about this possibility might be fruitful, or people here would know where to direct me. With appreciation if you can be of some help in suggestions, Rand Robinson

I doubt you will find anyone interested in running a charter on this route so late in the season, unless of course price is no object.

Its also the wrong direction for that late in the sailing season. Most boats have already come into the Rio Dulce by June to sit out hurricane season there.

You state you have some sailing experience so you might be able to get on as crew if someone wants to make a run for it in June.

Thank you So Very much for such a fast, practical answer; the question may be considered naive among those who know these sailing waters well but I just thought I should at least try to make the query. If it's just too hazardous of a trip to plan for in early June, that's fine...now I'm seeing if N95 masks are here in Guat at all, in anticipation of getting on a plane back by maybe early June.

Have you look at being a deck hand on a cargo ship?

Contact the US embassy there and tell them you want to get home asap. VP Pence says they have brought 75000 US citizens home via "Skybridge".

While I agree that it's the wrong-ish time of year for Guat to Fla, everything's different this year, and I'll bet there's some stranded boats who will try to make a break north before Hurricane season. Listen in daily on the cruisers radio net and offer your services as crew. I've hitched a ride to there once or twice: it's an ideal spot to pick up a boat.

You should get on the embassy email list for updates and then stage in Rio Dulce when it starts to sound good again. I doubt it would take long to catch a ride. Plenty of boats might be going non stop back to the US and want more crew.
There must be a bunch of boats stuck at anchor in Belize, Honduras etc that are going to make a run for it at some point. It would be pretty hard to hook up with one of them though.

The difficulty you'll have would not be whether boats are going to be heading there as I know some are. The real problem is those folks have been under self quarantine for the better part of a month with more to come. I doubt very much if they would want to take someone onboard their boat that might not be safe. There is just no way to know for sure so I think your going to face some resistance however with that said, I wish you all the luck and hope you make it back home.

The other issue is that even if your able to get on a boat when it arrives in Florida you have to go through a 2 week quarantine......sometimes that's tough doing with someone you love much less a stranger. Could be interesting.
