'Nobody told us about the coronavirus pandemic'

Quote:
They were able to prove their travel history, which showed that not only had they not been to Italy in months, they had also been in isolation for 25 days at sea. They were finally able to stand on dry land.
Moral of the story...

Track you progress, don't receive any 'bad news,' and plead ignorance.

Re: 'Nobody told us about the coronavirus pandemic'

I love their story. Out at sea 25 days and little contact with people at home. Ahhh! Ignorance is truly bliss!

I think they're safely ensconsed in St. Vincent...? Waiting to make a break somewhere before hurricane season.

Wish I was "stuck" in St. Vincent...
It was -7 in Toronto and we actually had a significant snow squall blow through yesterday. April weather! Ugh!

Right? This was a great little read. Just goes to show you were tremendously powerful quarantine vehicle boats can be.

I recommend checking their Facebook page. Most of the information in the BBC article was inaccurate and not how it all played out.

Why am I not surprised?

Or, how horriably un prepared they were communication wise.
Compleatly, unaware of World Events, no SSB, or VHF for ship to ship contact.
Never talked to any other boats for 25 days?
Unlikely!

Re: 'Nobody told us about the coronavirus pandemic'

We sailed from San Diego to the Marquesas, 24 days, with no outside contact except WWV to get time hacks and weather. No big deal but then a Pandemic didn't break out while we were at sea. BTW, the sail was really peaceful and quiet and in many ways better than on later passages when we had two way radio contact. Ignorance can really be bliss.

Re: 'Nobody told us about the coronavirus pandemic'

The BBC News (to distinguish between its larger parent BBC) is a really good news source and usually very accurate. I read the BBC News article https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-52332899viewed (read posts on) Sailing Kittiwake's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/sailingkittiwake/, and listened to the interview with BBC Sounds Geoff Lloyd https://youtu.be/b68Zc7NvVm8. Sailing Kittiwake expressed shame because they didn't think the article was accurate, and pointed to the interview with Lloyd as being the "REAL story about our Atlantic crossing and the pandemic". What did I miss? I didn't detect any substantive or shameful inconsistencies between the three.

Re: 'Nobody told us about the coronavirus pandemic'

It would be helpful for Ryan and Elena to cite the exact BBC News article quotes they claim were made up rather than whinging about nebulous inaccuracies. All the articles, and interviews convey virtually the same information, certainly the salient points. Nothing to be "ashamed" about.

You could try reading the articles. They had satellite text, but had requested no bad news, which is fairly common when sailing long distances.

Why would you want or need to contact other vessels if you didn't need to?

We were cruising when Sept 11 twin towers happened
We had VHF which we turned on daily to get weather or if a coast watch plane flew overhead, but it was still a full 3 months after it happened before we knew about it.

Re: 'Nobody told us about the coronavirus pandemic'

We've always had ham radio. We were cruising in the Loyalty Is. in New Caledonia when 9/11 happened. We learned about it that day. I said to Jim, "My God, that's an act of war!" We later went into a village, and the gendarmerie flag was flying at half mast, for the Americans slain. Very moving.

We have a lady singlehander friend who was enroute South Africa to Martinique, but who has ham radio e-mail, and we decided to tell her what was awaiting her. Not an easy decision, because as Tillsbury suggested and roverhi also mentioned, no bad news can be a good thing when there's nothing you can do about it, anyway. In the case of our friend, who has a number of "pen pals", she had already been alerted, and was ready with a mask when she entered Martinique. She has since departed there and is bound for Europe.

In the case of the Kittiwake, really can't blame them for not wanting to be told of bad news, and at the same time, a heads up might have been good.

Re: 'Nobody told us about the coronavirus pandemic'

@boatyarddog,

When you're at sea on a long passage, you rarely see another boat. You may see ships, and if you have AIS and radar, you may receive notification of others you cannot see. However, other boats are not really all THAT welcome: they are something to make sure you stay clear of. It is a different mind set than coastal cruising. Once you make port, then they are a potential source of friendship. But the sailboat you come up on in the middle of the darkest hours of the night, and especially so if he's unlit, that is a hazard, same as a small islet would be, and if he doesn't have enough electricity to run his nav lights, he sure as heck doesn't have his VHF on. They're darn scary.

Re: 'Nobody told us about the coronavirus pandemic'

Year's ago, i crewed on a power yacht just launched in Singapore,we did a great circle route to Long Beach, California, took 60 day's, we decided to not listen to any outside new's, only on board music, wonderful experience, upon closing the coast, we turned on the radio, same ****, only the date and name's had changed, i sail without any contact on passage's, to get away from it all, that's one of the reason's i do it !. I also slow down to make the passage's longer, i never understand why sailer's brag about how fast they make a passage, if you're in a hurry, get on a airplane.
