Covid in White-tail deer
https://www.discovermagazine.com/hea...r-the-pandemic
Earlier studies showed Covid-19 antibodies in 33% of deer in several U.S. states.
I can't see a Denmark/mink style cull in these wild deer.
A reservoir of infection like that could lead to never-ending mutations. So far they don't know if it can spread back from deer to human, but they also don't know how it spread from human to deer.
Damn you, Bambi !!!

Re: Covid in White-tail deer
Does that change the idea of the "herd" immunity, if deer can get it?
Does that mean that other herd type animals (e.g. cows) can carry it also?

Re: Covid in White-tail deer
Should we swap Bambi for Godzilla and then can take Bambi's place?

Re: Covid in White-tail deer
I find that rather odd, given a whitetail's commitment to social distancing from people.
In the US, State of Wisconsin, we just had about 550,000 'volunteers' spend 9 days 'mitigating' the problem by 'harvesting' between 200 to 300,000 deer from the herd.

Re: Covid in White-tail deer
...and then all/most of those harvested deer (the meat) are sent to homeless shelters for human consumption. Don't know if there are any studies on transmission from the meat after cooking.
I would expect the hunters and slaughter house personnel to be exposed if they gathered/dressed out contaminated deer.

USDA says no more than the usual game risks.

The vector is usually domesticated animals.

Wait, what? I'm not aware of much venison going to homeless shelters where I grew up hunting deer in Minnesota. I would expect the huge majority of Wisconsin hunters would make burger and sausage/brats out of their whitetails as well. Of course that doesn't mean that all hunters butcher their deer, so there would be some exposure to butcher shop employees. But we're not talking anything as horrific mad cow disease (BSE) here. Covid is a virus.

Yes, and we know all hunters use good hygiene practices and wear protective gear (wear gloves, etc.) while prepping out deer.

Some Don't Want to know!
It's quite real. Not "fake" news.
news.... https://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_he...deer-study.pdf
Your family pet can get it too.
And there are Zoo animals with it.
Other than being on a social forum, and in the Covid-19 section, this relates to boating in as that the info on Covid Spread is in the news and interferes with border crossing ect.
So, maybe Your in the wrong forum sub category?
