Re: Canadian boating - Great Lakes and Atlantic region

And just to pretend to keep this on topic, here's a short but growing little database on the state of Ontario marinas (select ON). You can email Wateway Guide with information which they'll add to this database.

Oh, and kissing the cod is a actual thing, but it's really just a way for the locals to get a good laugh at the tourists -- in the kindest and gentlest way of course .
Thanks Mike, forewarned is fore armed.

If I'm ever prompted to kiss a cod I'll tell them I did it on my first trip.

Good plan. I keep telling my Newfoundland friends that I'm an honorary Islander. I'm already related to 1/2 of the Avalon Peninsula (where my father came from).

Good thing you added the bracketed info about your dad, thought for a moment that you had been a very active character.

Both could be true .

I hear you. I do the same when I travel down south in the US. My mother was born and raised in South Carolina and I was born there. Makes me a southerner and eligible to join the Sons of the Confederacy, not that I want to join that group.

Re: Canadian boating - Great Lakes and Atlantic region

Those of us who need to cross provincial boundaries to get to our boats will find it increasingly difficult:

Many provinces, territories enforcing border checkpoints and travel restrictions

Re: Canadian boating - Great Lakes and Atlantic region

It's starting to look like the only way I'm getting back to Canada is sailing straight up the east coast from here(bahamas)
Then I'll have to figure out the inter provincial travel!
Oh, and for all you talking about winters, I'm from Edmonton Alberta, (3 hours north of calgary) and we did live in grande prairie for a while, another 5 hours drive north. We typically have snow 7-8 months and I have seen it snow in every month!
Why do you think I'm on a boat in the bahamas[emoji16]

Not sure of our exact destination, if you are headed to the Great Lakes, the St Lawrence Seaway and Welland Canal are closed to recreational boaters.

Not sure about the status of the Erie Canal yet.

Of issue is that travel on the canal is inherently recreational / non-essential at least as the emergency executive orders. And with the revenue constraints of the N.Y. State budget there is expected to be considerable belt tightening from what was an abundant budget.

FYI.

Erie County Announces Fines for Violating the PAUSE Order

Individuals violating the PAUSE order can be fined as a violation of New York State Health Law (PBH 12-B), which carries up to a $2,000 fine for a first-time violation, or up to a $5,000 fine for a second violation.

For businesses, violation of the PAUSE order is considered a willful violation of the New York State Health Law, which is considered a criminal misdemeanor. This is punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 for a first time violation, and/or one year of imprisonment.

So you're still in the Bahamas? Any chance you can wait it out there for a bit longer? The Erie Canal usually opens mid-May (I believe), but when, or even if, it will do so this year is anyone's guess. The official website is still saying May 15, but...

You may have to head to Halifax, or someplace along the NS shore, if you have to get back to Canada. That's certainly a different journey than taking the ICW and the Canals.

Edmonton is truly north @ 53ºN -- but it's still just a dry cold .

Another prairie sailor I was born and raised in Red Deer and spent a good chunk of time in Edmonchuk, actually Sherwood Park but the last half of my life I've lived on the coast. I'm always surprised by how many prairie sailors I have met over the years in places all over the world.

What's with all these smart midwesterners "stuck" on their boats in the Bahamas...? Would it be too early to ask what your next year's itinerary will be...

My wife is from Pincher Creek, Alberta. A small town in the SW corner of the province down in the foothills. I wonder if prairie folk are drawn to sailing because it reminds them of the wide open expanses of their youth. The oceans are big and flat (sometimes ) with nothing in the way to spoil the view.
