Post LiFe(Y)PO4 BMS Dessign - good reading for DIY BMS developers

Hi electronics enthusiasts who potentially want to built their own BMS,
because they do not trust the industry ;-)

Here is all you need to know:

https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Manag...049/ref=sr_1_1

Peek preview on google:

https://books.google.de/books?id=o-Q...viewport&hl=de

Enjoy!

What is your connection?

Have you read it?

Are you sincerely recommending it?

Does it in fact review the available OTS BMSs in the context of avoiding the shoulders?

I have yet to find one that even allows for the most basic pre-requisite, user-custom setpoints adjustment.

Nor a single one that isn't preset way into the shoulders on both sides.

Not a matter of "not trusting" anyone, no one says making these factual statements

No mainstream auto maker sells any models designed to easily last 100 years. This is not a technical challenge, but simply the result of the free market providing no incentive to do so.

Maximization of profits, even mere survival in a free market system, requires planned obsolence.

If you want to own such a vehicle, you will need to in effect build it yourself and stockpile the required parts for when these companies no longer exist.
is spouting any conspiracy theory, in fact I don't see how anyone would not shrug and agree, no malice is assigned to the industry, this is simply Reality as it presents itself to any rational observer.

Re: LiFe(Y)PO4 BMS Dessign - good reading for DIY BMS developers

I have no incentives on that one. It is a very complete in-depth discussion about the different Li battery technologies and the different BMS designs and challenges, including functional diagrams and circuit examples for possible practical solutions. It discusses also what IC technologies to use or avoid when designing a BMS and many other technical aspects. (DIY BMS discussion from page 121 on...)

Use the peak preview in google and decide yourself, if it is for you or not. You can read a lot of pages for free, just use the navigation buttons. It is quite expensive and very technical, maybe you can check it out at a public library first - if you find it interesting...
There is also an e-Book version I heard.

Looks like a great resource.

Hope new editions come out every year or two, much needed with such a fast moving topic, big advantage of e-publishing.

If anyone gets the e-book version, let me know I'll barter for your copy when you're done with it.

I am far from any library that would carry it.

That is the 2010 or 2011 edition I think. Or is it?

Thanks, would be great.

The reviewed BMS'es are a little outdated, the LFP BMS business has grown very quickly the last few years and many new players have entered the market, but the general in-depth discussions around the technology and the various approaches to solve the problems are still valid.

It is not for everyone, it is a little expensive, very in-depth and requires an electronics background when it comes to the details and proposed circuitry. There are cheaper and shallower publications around for DIY LFP battery builder from available building blocks with more practical approaches.

However - following the many discussions here in the forum, where some members try to dig deeper - it can be a very valuable source of information.

Found that one online, cannot recommend it yet, have not had the chance to peek into it / read it, but it has some good reviews.
Seems to provide the basics and targets more the average Joe.

Re: LiFe(Y)PO4 BMS Dessign - good reading for DIY BMS developers

I have met Davide (and used to live just a few blocks from his company, by coincidence).

They make BMSes that are of good repute and are quite scalable. However, like many small-scale BMS manufacturers, they have to sell them at a fairly high entry price to be able to feed their families.

There's nothing wrong with that, except that that economic motivator colors a lot of Davide's opinions on how batteries should be built up. I take issue with some of his claims and opinions in some areas -- mostly not ones espoused in this book, but rather in some of his papers and presentations available elsewhere online.

I read this book and found it pretty dry and academic, but it is still a useful primer to someone who wants to get serious about the space in a thorough way. Like many academic treatments of many things, it covers a broad theoretical landscape, much of which is irrelevant or inaccessible once you start actually trying to interact with the real world marketplace.
