Blue nova LiFePO4

Bit of an advertorial by Sailing Lady Africa for Blue Nova, probably so that they get cheap/free batteries from them, but I found it semi interesting nonetheless.

Looks like Blue Nova are building banks using Winston Cells, with BMS and canbus on top packaged up into a IP67 box. No talk at about which chargers or other sources can actually make use of the canbus, but they seem to be using a lot of Victron gear.

Re: Blue nova LiFePO4

If truly based on genuine Winston cells, may well be a good packaged solution.

Look forward to learning more details

Re: Blue nova LiFePO4

£889/$1160 for their 156Ah mini 2000Wh with thermal shutoff,BMS and voltage cut off per unit is a pretty good price, though good luck getting them anywhere except cape town at that price.(($2400 for 310Ah in 2 banks)

then throw in another $5-8k for victron inverter charger, mppt controllers, monitor ,shunt,ARC,fuses, cable ,DC-DC alternator controller and a couple of 250W solar panels and you are already at $10k including 310Ah/4000Wh of batteries for $2400.

this in turn if pulling 240AH per day will require a genset of at least 2Kw for those cloudy days,or will be running the main engine.

also you want some redundancy if running all your domestic off of 220v,so second charger and inverter,so another $1k for basic sine wave inverter and small smart charger.

thats $11k to support 310AH of batteries, which in 5 years time will probably be obsolete and all systems will need to be upgraded to support newer tech anyway

Re: Blue nova LiFePO4

To compare between LFP and another option,

just adding up all the full systems cost most of which is required by any chemistry

doesn't help much.

Personally, when helping fit out a system, I reco all future-proof components, so they can switch to any chemistry later on.

This makes the incremental added cost of infrastructure pretty minimal going from whatever type of lead to LFP.

But inherent in that conversion is 5-7x the cost just for the batteries, at least in the NA market.

to me it just seems like a very complex and expensive solution to having power onboard, considering they have a limited budget and want to go sailing in 3 months time.

3x trojan t 105 banks @12v $800 675Ah= to 310Ah @50%DOD
2x 250w solar panels $600
pwm controller $150
2000 w inverter $400
30amp charger $300
2kva suitcase genset $1000
cable ,fuses breakers etc $500

total $ 3750 weight saving 75 kg compared to lpo

go sailing
