Sydney to Jervis Bay

Hi to the salts with knowledge...... I'm not one of them, that's a why I'm asking.
What would be the average time to sail down to JB from Sydney?
I have a Bavaria 47 CC
Having done this trip many times on the Grey Funnel Line, but never under sail.

Call it nostalgia, but am keen to sail into JB and a night at the Husky pub is the topping.
Ps not sure of what month, depends on favourable weather.

Re: Sydney to Jervis Bay

In summertime, for us, at 46 ft., with a favorable wind direction, it is a comfortable daylight hours sail from Pt. Hacking's Jibboon Beach down to Jervis Bay. It will not be comfortable off Huskisson if you have 20-25 out of the N.

Make sure you check the tides carefully for getting in and out of Huskisson.
Depending on your draft, you may have very limited timings.
You can, of course, anchor off and go in by dinghy at any time.

Oh, and the distance from the Heads to Huskisson is 90 nm so 18 hours at 5 knots.

I agree with Ann, my tub is no racing sled but I managed it in daylight hours, just.

Re: Sydney to Jervis Bay

sydney heads - JB heads say 85nm. say 5.5k so 15.5-16hrs +/-

watch your weather in JB. there is precious little shelter, esp in a northerly (which is what you'll be looking for on the trip down). hole-in-the-wall is nice in anything from east through to SW, and there are some ok anchorages in honeymoon bay on the north side. if looking for an anchorage, be aware that a lot of the bay is a fish sanctuary and anchoring may not be permitted

the channel up to huskisson is pretty shallow...you'll need hw. however there are a couple of public moorings outside if the weather is suitable.

on the otherhand, if you are ex grey funnel line maybe the boys at creswell will take pity on you and let you in there ?

finally, if you are down that way, getting into the shoalhaven river at greenwell point is easy and a worthwhile looksee

cheers,

Ah, Chris, you've forgotten how he backwash approaching Point Perpendicular affects monos. Shoalhaven's an altogether different destination than Jervis.

Ann

PS. We like to stay well off and turn in after we're very near the latitude of PP. It's not shortest, but it keeps my tummy happier.

Re: Sydney to Jervis Bay

I too have taken the grey funnel line to JB (BRISBANE and SUCcESS) and then sailed there under my own steam an number of times. Leave in the afternoon and get there in the forenoon the next day. I sailed there once on my Bav 49 and then on the way back from South Australia on my Catania 42. On the way down, will want to stay off the coast to negate the coastal reverse tidal effect from the East Australian current. When you get there look out for areas on your chart that mark fish farms/holding areas. Also watch out for the many ships anchored off Botany Bay. The can start to move at short notice so have your AIS turned on - if you have one.

Re: Sydney to Jervis Bay

Thanks everyone. I know Cresswell very much as I was stationed there for 18 months Fleet Support.
I will anchor off Husky or pick up a bouy if spare, Hole in the Wall is always nice.
I have just bought a Bavaria Ocean 47 CC.
Past ships were Melbourne CV21, Derwent and Swan.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.

Re: Sydney to Jervis Bay

Several ex grey funnel line yachties in Greenwell Point. Courtesy mooring and a short walk to the pub. Much smoother dinghy ride than off Huskisson.
