Broome to Perth... next week

Hi there,
I am crewing on a 80+foot (power) boat from Broome to Perth ... next week. I haven’t done an open ocean trip like this. 😳 Any insights? Suggested websites? I would Lomé to read up on what we have in store. Cheers

This book is gold and you can down load it for free.

Ningaloo Reef is a high light but an 80' power boat will have limited access.

Re: Broome to Perth... next week

There are lots of treasures on the way. You will probably have head winds all the way but it shouldn't trouble an 80 foot motor boat too much.

You will be a bit size restricted but my one favourite, that I would rate as a must see, is Exmouth Gulf. The Humpbacks will have started their migration south by now but the bay should still be full of mothers with their calves. Even if you are not going to Exmouth its worth SLOWLY cruising into the gulf down to the latitude of Exmouth.

I like to think that the mothers are teaching the young how to behave on the long trek south. They are not usually putting on major displays but there are just so many of them. The mother will roll on her back and wave a fin. The calf will then do the same and if its not a correct repetition mum will do it again until the calf gets it right.

The whales migrate south roughly following the 100 metre line. They stay in the same order behind each other (no overtaking if you are a whale). There is sometimes a bit of excitement, around Cape Murat, as the next ones out wait their turn in the line and finally start the big trip. Apparently they all sing the same song which changes every year. Perhaps not spectacular but definitely heart lifting.

Forgot to mention that, coming south of Exmouth Bateman Bay offers good shelter. You can anchor in the southern part and use the tender to explore the reef south of Point Maud.

Download a (free) copy of the Western Australian Cruising Guide Edition 5.2,
from https://www.fsc.com.au/wa-cruising-guide/

or just google "Western Australian Cruising Guide"
It is over 600 pages long and contains most of what you need to know - weather, harbours, pilotage, regulations, history etc.

Re: Broome to Perth... next week

Just prepare yourself for around 900 miles of head winds and short sharp seas.

Right now you are at the beginning of the "100 days of wind" along that coast. world famous amongst wind surfers

80 feet will be enough to not make it too bad unless the skippers in a rush of course

The link Jim was using is out of date. Not only does it require a member number, but the download is the old edition of the book. I am trying to get it removed. Please use the one I give in order to get the latest (Jan 2019) edition.

Hi Kim, if you are part of making this book available, I'd like to thank you very much for your generosity, it is excellent. Please pass my thanks on to others.
