The only taxes will be GST on Brokerage and any services used at a rate of 10%

Setting up in Australia will be very easy and returning. Trying to do it in Fiji etc. Absolutely hopeless. Even basic things are not available it all has to come from Au or NZ. We just completed a Circumnavigation a year ago.

Not so. From your own link:

"Masters of foreign craft not registered under the law of a foreign country must make a declaration about the nationality of their craft when leaving Australia.

All Australian craft or vessels, irrespective of size or type whether owned by an Australian citizen or by an Australian company, must be registered before leaving Australia. "

Ahem:
"Ships cannot be registered under trade names, trusts or partnerships."

Bingo!
Many good intentions but very slim on facts,
As suggested - read the customs and AMSA websites.

Re: Brit buying a boat in Oz to take east

Thank you all - yes good links which I have been looking into in detail. I have a plan A : transfer to UK SSR upon purchase which lets me stay in Oz waters for a year and then exit the country, I could then return and get another year of allowance, but after that [or if I wanted an easier sale] I would need to pay importation costs at the other end. It's always good to keep ears open for anything which might indicate trouble ahead. Personal experience is handy for adding to regulation information

I had no trouble importing a US boat before, it wasn't prohibitively expensive and the customs folk were great to deal with. I kept it registered on the UK SSR until I sold it (which took just under a year!).
