Australian duty and tax

Hello all . Please forgive if this has Been asked or done to death before . In 2 or so years we will be exiting the rat race and living on a catamaran. I will more than likely get something overseas. So I have heard our duty and tax payable here in OZ includes costs of sailing it here . Food repairs etcetc. So what if I decided to do Europe for a year and Caribbean for a year before coming home. Would all those costs be lumped on? Or would they calculate a straight trip here. Who decides cost etc. also how long have we got till we have to pay duty amd tax after buying it overseas. Another possibly dumb question is could you buy it in Europe , pay duty and tax there and then to AUSTRALIA then sail it gradually home?

Use google and you will find lots of information out there. For example this link has lots of good information, (Note not a Government site and last updated 2013)

And in the CF :

Re: Australian duty and tax

The transportation cost that gets included in your duty and tax bill is the cost of the last leg.

ie under you plans stop in NZ for awhile and then continue on. The cost of that NZ - AUS leg will be included but not the 1 or 2 years before that. If you leave it too long you may be assessed tax on market value not cost however so when it comes time you should consult an expert before importing'

That said Aussie boats are currently quite a bit cheaper than overseas due to our collapsed AUD and thats not going to change anytime soon. I have switched from looking in europe back to Australia but am in no rush whatsoever as boat prices take awhile to reflect economic damage.
