The weather report looks like it will favour the larger and mid-sized boats with strong southerlies for the next day, then decreasing wind to almost nothing in Bass Strait in three days from now. We’re at Wineglass Bay right now and will come out tomorrow afternoon to watch and follow the leaders around Tasman Island.

It is possible, if you are interested, to take your boat through the slot between Tas. Is. The Cathedral Rocks are spectacular, especially in the morning light. The race boats are not allowed through there (and sometimes the wind gets messed up, too) but there is width enough for you and depth as well. The race course takes you well off Cape Raoul as well, but, again, can be great pics if you are closer. Beware onshore set if strong S'ly winds.

Great suggestion, thanks. The leaders aren’t into Bass Strait yet so I expect they’ll be down here tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Is Port Arthur and/or Safety Cove OK in a southerly? If so, we’ll head out this afternoon, overnight in Port Arthur, and come out to view the boats tomorrow.

Then onwards to Hobart to officially check into Tasmania.

The best S'ly protection in the Port Arthur area is in Carnarvon bay, and that is near bullet proof. In milder S'lies anchoring just off the historic bits is fine and is a spectacular sight in morning sunshine... the old sandstone buildings simply glow.

Safety cove is poorly named IMO, subject to swell and not all that much wind protection.

It’s a race! We left Shoal Bay on Maria Island this morning with a very light SW. 5 knots boat speed and 27 miles to Tasman Isand. Black Jack and Law Connect are double our distance away and doing either 6.1 or 15.3 knots. Who will get there first?

We’ve got 10-20 knots of S to SSW filling in from Tasman Island to Maria Island. The two leaders (Law Connect has lost 7 miles to Black Jack in the past couple hours in the light stuff) and perhaps Scallywag as well if they keep gaining in the Freyicent hole are almost through to the wind and should speed up, albeit tacking.

We’re 9 miles shy of Tasman Island with the wind directly from it, so it’s going to be close. An absolutely beautiful day and I hope there will be some professional photos of the boats rounding Tasman Island.

Wow, really steep swells on short period from the south, with 15-20knots out of the S approaching Tasman Island from the north, then 20-25 from the SW at Tasman Island and into Storm Bay.

Approaching Tasman Island on starboard tack as we got the SW wind it put us head on to the wave. Despite two reefs in the main we still had to slow down by feathering to <7 knots to avoid launching off and burying the bows to the mast in the next wave - boat breakers for sure. Good luck to the racers and that they don’t break anything.

Given the lousy conditions we suffered around Tasman Island we’ve high tailed it for Port Arthur and will watch the boats on TV.

For the sailors, Black Jack about 10 miles to Tasman Island must be in the S wind now and positioning inshore for the SW. Though there is a wind shadow and at least 5 knots less within 5 miles of the shore.

Law Connect must have had an issue based on their track and Scallywag has taken second. They’re by Maria so probably not in the bigger breeze yet.

Looks like there’s going to be a big hole in Storm Bay and the Derwent this evening, so it could still be a three boat race for the finish.
