Self defense

We are planning a cruise from Bahamas to Panama. The rout will take us through windward passage to Jamaica, providentia, to Colon. Is piracy a concern on this rout? If so, what type of self defense is effective and legal? Thanks.

Re: Self defense

Earlier this year, we sailed through the Bahamas, through the Windward Passage, stopping in Port Antonio and Montego Bay in Jamaica before sailing on to Colón and had no problems. However, our insurance carrier specifically denied us coverage if we sailed into Cuba, Venezuela or Honduras waters.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Re: Self defense

There have been some issues around the Nicaraguan Banks...take a look at NoonSite & CSSN for the details, but otherwise not many issues on that route.

Colon proper is mostly a ghetto and cruisers have found trouble there, but if you are cautious its a good place for parts & some services.
