If you want to comply with the law, yes

If you are not a Florida resident, and you move the boat out of Florida within 90 day, then the answer is no, you do not owe sales tax to the state of Florida.

As already mentioned, see the postings above for the official Florida government publications on this. The explanations are really pretty clear. (Which is why it amazes me that so many people continue to get it wrong.)

If you purchase the boat from an individual and not through a broker/dealer you owe taxes period.

All sales of boats between individuals are fully taxable if the sale and/or delivery occurs in Florida.

If you move it to Texas then you may owe Texas Sales / Use taxes, albeit with a credit for taxes paid in Florida.

TAX CODE

TITLE 2. STATE TAXATION

SUBTITLE E. SALES, EXCISE, AND USE TAXES

CHAPTER 160. TAXES ON SALES AND USE OF BOATS AND BOAT MOTORS

That’s a good point and accurate. From experience, don’t be late registering and paying your Texas sales tax, the fines and interest are a killer.

no logical way around the sales tax issue.
just suck it in, pay it, be done with, and get on with your life.

I haven’t read all the prior replies but:
1. There’s no need to involve a broker. That only adds complications to a simple transaction.
2. You should instead be present at the survey snd sea trial. Cost of being present is an excellent investment.
