Adding an owner to a TIP in Mexico

Does anyone have any experience in adding a name to a current TIP in Mexico? I am bringing on a partner into boat ownership and want to make sure all is legal and good to go when she is down here operating the boat in Mexican waters. Thanks in advance. Also, it's important to say that she will be sailing here in Mexico while I am crewing on another boat to French Polynesia and beyond so she must have legal say over the boat while I'm gone.

Thank you in advance...

The folks here can help you with your unique situation.

You probably need a lawyer to help determine if the original TIP can be changed. Ensenada will likely be your easiest location outside of LaPaz

If your on your first TIP, the banjecito folks will likely have you cancel it, and then issue a new (your second TIP) with the new owners listed, and a $60USD fee.

The problem arises that you can only have three TIPS with the same owner(s).
before the boat must be physically taken out of Mexico for a period, and then re-enter the country and apply for a new TIPS.
You can only keep the boat in Mexico for 30 years as the original owner.

If the boat is sold, its important to cancel the old TIP at a Banjercito office. Or, the new owner will have great difficulty in registering for a new TIP.
{regardless of how many times it changes hands)

I hope this helps, but I'm not a lawyer versed in Mexican laws. I've only stood in line at Banjercito many times talking with other boaters.

Re: Adding an owner to a TIP in Mexico

You can't Amend a TIP, they are canceled and a new TIP Obtained.
This will be viewed as a Change in Ownership, so the Boat must Check out of Mexico and cancel the current TIP and then Check back into Mexico with the new Registration Doc and get a new TIP.

You can do all of this yourself OR you can have an agent do it for you.

Email me for help if you need it at:
Info@LaPazCruisersSupply.com

Doing it wrong WILL SCREW YOU. So be careful.
