US Midwestern Rivers

I usually sail Lake Michigan, but I am building a small trailer sailor that I would like to use on rivers. I like the Huck Finn idea of letting the current take me along and maybe doing a little sailing if the wind is right. This is pretty easy to do on the bigger rivers where there is commercial traffic, but how do you figure out what smaller rivers are navigable?

For example the Wabash River in Indiana, or any of the rivers that lead into the Ohio or Mississippi River. How can I figure out where to put my boat in and get to the next biggest river? Are there cruising guides for small boats that tell you where there are locks and what the air draft is under the bridges? I think the TennTom route should be easy to find information on, but what about smaller rivers?

I will have a draft of under 1 foot and a removable mast, so I can get past a lot of barriers, but the boat will be too heavy to lift and move without a trailer. So dams without locks are a problem.

There are guidebooks for several of the inland rivers including the Wabash River at:
River Books, Maps & Programs -> For adventure & natural beauty, follow a river.
