Lord Howe Island Trip
I am planning a cruise out to Lord Howe Island from Sydney at the beginning of September.
Has anyone done this trip at this time of the year and if so what weather did you experience?
Did you moor in the lagoon and what were the conditions like there?
Steve

Steve, living on the other side of the world I had to Google Lord Howe Island. Wow what a fab location, just go and then tell us all about it.

Hi Pete,
Had a great trip, returned all safe and sound.
Read all about it at www.sweetchariot.net.au and select the link at top of page.

Re: Lord Howe Island Trip
The Gosford Sailing club organises an annual race to Lord Howe at the end of October. While the timing is a bit later than your plan, and you may not wish to join them, you may get some good tips chatting at the bar.

Thanks very much for the info Steve, if not this year maybe next, however I dont know about a race, it would be nice to sail in company, you see our boat has a reputation of finishing a race but not of winning lol which is fine by us

Re: Lord Howe Island Trip
The third post, on this link Lord Howe Island - Sailing - Seabreeze Forums! (although a couple of years old) is wealth of information.
Also Noonsite. Noonsite: Lord Howe Island
I know there is a limit on how many visiting vessels they allow at any time. Best not to conflict with the Gosford/LH race unless youre in it.

Re: Lord Howe Island Trip
I have not set any dates but was tentatively thinking about October (outside of the race dates of course) but that was working on the assumption that the weather was generally favourable because the race was held in that month? So have no real idea yet of when it would be best to go.
February may be a bit soon as I am still preparing my yacht but I won't discount it.
My only problem with July August is that it’s in the middle of winter and my wife hates the cold But I won't rule that out if it means Sweet Chariot can come along. Would be great to have a boat along that’s been there before.
So, is there a best time of year with regard to more favourable weather that we should aim for or do we just check our work schedules and try to agree on something?
I am based in Sydney, where are you guys?

Hi Hoohaa
I can totally understand your wife, you see I dont like the winter at all either.
We are in Melbourne at the moment, moving aboard in two days time and heading north to the Whitsunday, spending about 3 weeks in Sydney on our way, where abouts in Sydney are you ?

I am up on the central coast. I have been at sea on worse nights, but as the mercury is dropping now, I would lose the desire to sail there in winter too. With LHI on just about the same latitude as Port MacQuarie, I doubt any part of the trip is going to be toasty until October.
