Dumb and Dumber Thieves!

Add this to the list of Dumb and Dumber thieves! 1) Steal a boat you don't know how to sail and, 2) steal one that is continuously broadcasting its position to everyone on the Automatic Identification System.

Stories here: Sailboat washes ashore in Pacifica; no injuries - California State Wire - fresnobee.com ... and here: http://pacifica.patch.com/articles/s...inda-mar-beach

AIS track here: http://aprs.fi/#!ts=1362355200&te=13...=i%2F319174000

If you look closely at the AIS track, you'll see a 360 degree turn abeam Daly City. My guess is: that's where the engine quit. After that, they became "sailors" and, with no spinning prop to compensate for their lack of sailing skills, the boat just drifted dead downwind until it ran aground. They'll have plenty of time now to read up on how to sail!

Re: Dumb and Dumber Thieves!

No news article, but I know a guy who had a bunch of sails stolen off his boat. A few days later they went up on Craig's list, the ad including the sail numbers from the boat.

Re: Dumb and Dumber Thieves!

Years back some Boeing employees "borrowed" a self-inflating emergence raft meant for one of the new jets. Took it river rafting. Didn't realize that as soon as it inflated it would start summoning the Coast Guard on its own.

Oh yeah, A black Oyster 80 with a carbon fiber mast is just going to blend in everywhere, like another white Catalina 30.
