Clothes for sailing in Thailand?
I'm going to Phuket for my first sailing experience at the weekend and can't wait! Could anyone please tell me what you wear in that climate? I feel like on an open boat, day sailing, the sun will be my biggest enemy and getting badly burnt would spoil my trip. I've bought a big bottle of factor 50 and a hat, and am deliberating over one of those daft 'sun shirt' plastic jackets, but also feel like any old long sleeves might do.
Any other packing tips would be welcome.
Cheers!

Lightweight long-sleeved shirts work well with hats and sunscreen. Whatever you decide, visit your local thrift shop and get them used. I just picked up two pairs of board shorts and a Hawaiian shirt for under $10 total.
Cheers, Bill

Those UV jacket things look daft, but probably a necessity in this case.

I'd happily do that. The problem with being 6'3" and living in China is that clothes shopping of any sort is tricky. Best I can do is buying online.

Re: Clothes for sailing in Thailand?
Phuket has all it takes, also the UV 50 glue so you do not need to bring anything.
Quality UV shades are difficult to get (99% material on stalls is fake Chinese merchandise). Bring your quality RayBans along then.
Make sure your hat has something to pin or tie it down - a string below your chin will prevent parting with your decoration half way down the trip. Use a relatively large brimmed hat, a beanie is next to useless. Fantastic value local hats (USD 1) available locally.
Long sleeve very open (buttoned) and very lose fit shirt works treats. Easily available locally. Prevents from sun UV AND FROM MOSQUITOES.
Some white skin people use white cloth gloves (mostly long time residents though, few tourists.)
Shoes are easy to buy but quality shoes are not easy to buy. It is very comfortable to use open trekking shoes, even if you wear socks.
Above all - get / bring and USE bugs repellent. You do not want malaria, dengue, chikungunya nor zika, this is sure. Bring the strongest most noxious repellent you can move across the border.

Spend a day in BKK start of your trip, incredibly cheap, or very tourist friendly shopping

'Elephant trousers'. You'll know what I mean when you get there. Cost about $2, long but light-weight. Basically disposable clothing. Something similar for the top. I go for long-sleeved, loose-fitting and light-weight fabric. Board shorts. $2 flip flops. Couple of t-shirts. Wide-brimmed hat or rquivalent. Sorted.

LL Bean has some great UV-resistant shirts. As a pale-skinned Canadian, I have worn mine during several Caribbean trips and they literally saved my hide!

Go to a tailor and tell what you want, it's cheaper in Thailand than shopping at H&M.. Dont't they have tailors in China? Anyway half of the Thai tailors are chinese me thinks

The good ones are Sikh
If you go that route head down to the fabric market area on Phahurat Rd headed toward Wat Pho https://g.co/kgs/yN3Dup
and buy a roll of khaki **linen**
pajama-style drawstring, always long trousers and sleeves

Re: Clothes for sailing in Thailand?
I just returned from a week's charter starting in Phuket. Most of the charter boats have Biminis but I'd still recommend covering up and using lots of sunscreen. In dinghy rides ashore you will burn to a crisp. Watch out too for all the jellyfish up around Pang Ng Bay (aka James Bond Island). Found there were none further south around Rai Lay / beach, Krabi and Phi Phi. I tried to anchor / moor on the East side of islands, given the wind coming form the West most of the time. Have fun!

Don't wear flip flops on board. They are dangerous.
If barefoot or wearing sandals , make sure you put plenty of sunblock on the tops of your feet. People tend to forget them.

Can you elaborate? I wear them often. At least as much time as I go barefooted.

Re: Clothes for sailing in Thailand?
Hi
I live here An sail here, for the last 6 years, so I just might know a little
Currently we are in the rainy season but have not had the normal heavy down pours for the last few weeks.
Sunscreen yes,( but don’t put it on the seat covers)
Large hat older the better, not trendy cap worn backwards
Shoes we don’t wear shoes on board full stop even on charter boats, height of bad manners.
Lose clothing, light type it’s hot an humidity is up high.
Most boats up here have shade in the cockpit.
Weather can change from bright sunshine to rain squalls in minutes.
Afraid to say bugger all wind at the moment, but that can change. Not sure if you are heading out from Yacht Haven, AoPo or Boat Lagoon.
Water is very warm .
Give me a shout if you need more info.
Cheers
