Re: Clothes for sailing in Thailand?
Ah yes. What they said.
But, I believe "UV resistant clothing" is marketing hype. I'm very prone to sunburn and I've never been burned through clothes. Yes, long sleeves, for sure; and a BIG hat.
Many shirts -- I change twice a day. It's very humid and hot.
And, yes, sunscreen on the tops of your feet. On the boat -- we don't need no stinking shoes. Sandals on shore. Do not wear trip-inviting flip-flops!
Above all, wear clothes that can get wet -- because they will get wet.

Two things:
1. Your feet can slide in them if you get pitched sideways.
2. You can get a line caught between the sole and your toes (same problem with any open toed sandals.) or your heel.

Re shoes, no one, no one wears them onboard up here , very rude if you do, all charter boats have large container for guests shoes.
Realise it might not be the done thing in america, but not all the world is american.

Not so much for a 6'3" OP.
Thai big & tall sizes go up to Medium.
You can get custom tailored stuff but now your price is near or above western prices. (if you have a cheap decent quality tailor, please share as we are heading to bangkok in a couple weeks)

Re: Clothes for sailing in Thailand?
Thanks everybody for the advice. I've ordered one of those daft UV shirts and a baseball cap to keep me going til I find something better. Will take bug spray with me and figure out footwear.
Basil or any anyone else in town - I'm gonna be on Ao Yon Beach, staying next to Siam Sailing's base. I've been on this forum discussing taking a sabbatical to learn to sail and go cruising, and this trip is me dipping my toes in the water. Part of what I would like to do is meet sailors and hopefully take a look at their boats, because up to now I only know what I've learned from books, google, and this forum. If you want to meet up for a beer I'm there.

Currently we are in the rainy season but have not had the normal heavy down pours for the last few weeks.
Sunscreen yes,( but don’t put it on the seat covers)
Large hat older the better, not trendy cap worn backwards
Shoes we don’t wear shoes on board full stop even on charter boats, height of bad manners.
Lose clothing, light type it’s hot an humidity is up high.
Most boats up here have shade in the cockpit.
Weather can change from bright sunshine to rain squalls in minutes.
Afraid to say bugger all wind at the moment, but that can change. Not sure if you are heading out from Yacht Haven, AoPo or Boat Lagoon.
Water is very warm .
Give me a shout if you need more info.
Cheers

Correct and true...
As a long time sailors, who got more than once hit the toes on deck equipment, we do like shoes onboard.
But as street shoes are detrimental to wooden decks, we always have with us a dedicated pair that is used only onboard.
In colder climes it will be a pair of boat sneakers with non-slipping soles, in hotter climes it will be a pair of rubber sneakers with holes/net upper part.
Enjoy Thailand, be prepared for large tide range and put sunscreen also on your ears (especially if you wear a baseball type hat).

Be careful on what type of sun cream you use. Thailand has banned sun cream that contains certain chemicals in national parks.

Is it because Halloween is approaching that it's being raised from the dead...?

Re: Clothes for sailing in Thailand?
In fact, it is not as difficult for ordinary people as, for example, Muslim women who are obliged to wear hijabs in such heat. Although, on the one hand, wearing a hijab is a big plus, you will never burn out in the sun because your whole body does not get into the sun in any way. But on the other hand, finding a particular hijab in which you can also swim is not an easy task. I can't swim, so I prefer the Prayer Dress hijab, which is surprisingly not so hot to wear. On the contrary, thanks to the hijab, it becomes cozy and pleasant in its own way. Perhaps you should try to wear a hijab in this heat?

Wearing closed toed shoes or closed toed sandals is not a nationality thing, it's a safety thing! When you are sailing a monohull, a good boat shoe not only adds grip but protects your toes from accidents, like kicking deck hardware and creating a bloody mess! Plus, wearing foot ware also adds UV protection. I understand that in a lot of Asian cultures, removing shoes when entering a house is considered polite but on the slanted deck of a heeled boat awash with water, being polite could cost you. A catamaran is a different story, but you can still kick a cleat!

How would you dress for a windy hike on a mountain above the treeline? It's basically the same but you need to factor in the potential for sea spray.
I usually sail wearing long cargo pants/trousers and a long sleeved t shirt or collared shirt and sailing gloves and a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses. This minimizes the need for sunscreen and protects your hands from getting rough.
I wear deck shoes with flat soles to minimize trips and slips and I have waterproof boots and clothing if things get wet.
Hope you enjoy!
