Re: can a unopened can of anti fouling paint last 10 years

Seeing as how this thread has been revived....

We had a 1/2 pt. tin of water based bottom paint for our forward looking depth sounder's transducer, who had recommended not to use regular bottom paint on it. It rusted out the bottom of the can, and we were glad it was with other partially used paints in a plastic tub, or there would have been a really YUCKY mess that would have been way bigger.

We use leftover bottom paint to paint our log paddlewheel. I don't know about 10 yrs., though. As mentioned above, the solids settle out, and compact, and that's why we have stirrers.

I've used 7 year old Interlux Micron bottom paint and it's worked fine. It's on my self steering rudder and sat painted for 2 years in my garage before I installed it 2 years ago.

Wotname, You had inserted "only some paints do" in your quote of AlanR's reply. That insertion didn't show up in my quote. Just wondering what you meant by that

10 years .... maybe. Everything seems to outgas and leak at least some. I suspect often that some of the solvent would be gone after 10 years even in a sealed can. How much.. I dont know.

Confusion reigns...

OK, I didn't not insert anything into the quoted wording of AlanR's post. I quoted his original post verbatim. Looking at the time stamps of his post and my post, I suspect (but don't know for sure) that AlanR edited his post to remove the reference to "flat and gloss paints" after I had quoted the original wording. Any edit done by AlanR would not be reflected in the subsequent posts.

I have assumed AlanR's original wording (as shown in my quoted wording) was a comic reference to paints being "flat" like a Nicad battery might be flat but I don't really know what he was thinking or why he might have edited his post.

If this isn't the correct explanation of why the reference is in my quoted wording and not in his, then it must have been the internet faeries messing with CF.

To reiterate, I did not insert anything into AlanR's post - either the faeries inserted it or the faeries (or AlanR) removed it from AlanR's original post.

Clear as mud!

I neither inserted nor deleted the reference to flat and gloss paints. It must have been the fairies.

Re: can a unopened can of anti fouling paint last 10 years

After a somewhat cursory memory search, can't say that I've ever seen any paint that was still paint (i.e. not dried up) 'go bad'. But that's only in 50 or so years of painting...

Alan
Thanks for the clarification!

One to the fairies then!
