Yacht sinks off Bay of Islands in 40knots
Another yacht in trouble off NZ, presumably on the passage home. Doubt they'd be out there if they had a choice. One died, sad result.

Sad story with a lot of unanswered questions. That life raft looked really small in those waves. Would not want to be down there.

The opening frames of that video are pretty unpleasant with the waves breaking over the raft, certainly. And that wasn’t the boat’s raft, it was one the helicopter dropped so they did well to get anywhere near it. Looks like a couple of them are hanging on and still in the water, where they had been for a fair while.

Sad. Looks like a nasty low over the north island. Just what you don't want to meet after a 7-10 day passage from Fiji.

Sad to hear this - not good. Anyone hear why it sank and why they didn't use their own liferaft?

The NZ Herald story said their raft washed away. No information whether that was before or after they deployed it.

Thanks. We'll eventually hear what happened and hopefully learn from it. Looks like they were nearing the end of their passage and looking forward to making landfall. How quickly everything changes.
A sad day for all.

Re: Yacht sinks off Bay of Islands in 40knots
The liferaft dropped to the crew in the water was dropped by the RNZAF Orion aircraft not the helicopter.
The Orion was the aircraft sent to locate the sinking yacht. On arrival at the scene they discovered the crew were in a huddle in the water with the yacht already sunk. The helicopter arrived later to perform the rescue by winching them up.

Very very sad event - Stuart was a great guy and an experienced sailor
Big Ups to the rescue teams - dropping a life raft close to people from an airplane is not easy, nor is flying a helicopter on such a rescue mission
And the person on the end of the wire plucking people out of the water - very well done - has to be pretty bloody scary out there despite the training

Re: Yacht sinks off Bay of Islands in 40knots
I'm guessing there will be a maritime report on this, although there isn't likely to be a lot of evidence available. It would be interesting to find out what happened to cause the boat to sink. Whatever the cause, the danger of a liferaft flying away or being washed away when deployed is one that we don't often think about, but that must have been a sickening moment after the decision to leave the boat had been made.

Re: Yacht sinks off Bay of Islands in 40knots
This quote from the NZ Herald implies that they were completing a circumnavaigation and near home. Not sure how accurate it is.
Quote:
''To think of his sailing around the world and to be taken just off the coast of New Zealand, nearly at home, it's horrendous. You can't believe it. It's like a very, very bad dream.''

Any word yet on what caused the sinking?

Nothing in the NZ media yet, keep an eye on Sail-World/NZ (for articles written by a sailor, Richard Gladwell, rather than a journalist)
