Yacht overturns in Chesapeake

Another bad day on the water. https://www.capitalgazette.com/2024/...rns-edgewater/

Quote:
A 104-foot yacht near the mouth of the Rhode River near Edgewater overturned Saturday afternoon, said Coast Guard and Anne Arundel Fire Department representatives.

We were admiring that yacht a while ago in the Chester. Glad there were no injuries.

Re: Yacht overturns in Chesapeake

A friend of mine was the towboat captain mentioned in that article. He said it went from upright, to listing, to on its side on the bottom in 5 minutes.

That's a serious big hole in the boat to flood it that fast.

And, as always, the story as reported in the media is wrong in easily checkable details. M/V Lovebug is 123 feet, not 104. What do people learn in journalism school?

I've been told that a bad day on the water still beats a good day at work. It must depend on the work.

I hope the wreck doesn't block access to the Rhode River. A very nice place to anchor and enjoy the sunset.

The key here is ON the water not IN the water, nor under the water although if on purpose....

That person was a moron. A bad day on the water can be very bad. A good day at work probably does not involve getting fired, for example. I've had some horrible jobs, and a bad day on those was better than a bad day on the water (getting fired might have been a good day!).

Re: Yacht overturns in Chesapeake

I heard (TikTok) that an exhaust hose came loose and water came in.

Saw it via binocs earlier today…. Glad the captain was able to get her aground before going under…

Maybe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Length...perpendiculars

We "yachters" tend to emphasize our LOA ( adding any fore & aft projection) to establish our superior-ness to our yacht neighbors. .

Commercial vessels are interested in cargo$$capacity.

Dif'rent strokes....

Cheers/Len

Re: Yacht overturns in Chesapeake

123’ length overall according to its registry on a tracking app. Is the 104’ possibly at the waterline? When I hear length, like my 40’ sailboat, I hear waterline, not my overall length including bowsprit and davits (44’) and is 40’ is how it is described by the manufacturer. But, when identifying a boats length for mooring or dock space, the dock or harbor master wants overall length which could and should be the description on Marine tracking and reservation apps.

Without checking the link, why did I know this would be a gin palace rather than a sailing vessel?

That’s all you can think of??? Your nice anchorage might not be available to you anymore? Really?

Let’s see: Five people aboard who all got off without injury. Yacht is settled on a mud bottom, so apparently no major damage from the sinking. No signs of noxious fluids leaking out.

For whom shall I shed crocodile tears?

Oh, and the yacht was chartered for $125,000 per week.
