Well, it is true that on most cruising cats the boom is well above head height. That's certainly not to say something like this couldn't happen.

It would most likely happen on a Wharram. Topless chicks can be pretty distracting!

With a boomless wingsail?

I have been on two Pahi Wharrams in the last week and both had aluminium booms. It’s a bit like the topless chick thing, not everyone follows exactly what James Wharram does!
StuM when I think about I have maybe surveyed one Wharram that didn’t have a boom. That one had a tripod? Style mast and was boomless.

I spent a month cruising Milne Bay on a Wharram with a boomless gaff rigged wingsail.

How did she go with the wingsail? The only Wharram I have sailed on was a Pahi 41 with a standard sloop rig and we were occasionally touching 9 knots. I thought that was pretty good considering how worn out the boat was.

Not to derail this thread further, but the Wharram Wingsail Rig (the boomless design) came later.

Originally the Pahi's had booms, either conventional or wishbone, but the Wingsail Rig was offered later as an option.

The original Pahi 31 rig is a Bermudan cutter, with low cut, anti-twist, loose footed mainsail, but now she is also available with the Wharram Wingsail Rig, giving more clear centre deck space as the mast is placed further forward.

The Wingsail rig was devleoped in 1981 for Wharram's new Tiki models.

The Wingsail Rig is very efficient. It is not really a 'gaff rig' in the old sense. In modern terms essentially it is similar to a square top main, but also with a luff pocket that emulates some aspects of a wing mast.

Wharrams perform badly when they are built poorly and sailed poorly, often by non-sailors.

Built and sailed well, their performance can be very good.
As designed the hulls (should be) light weight and have good speed to length ratios.

Here is a great example, a French Wharram Tiki 38 averaging speeds in the low teens and hitting top speeds in the high teens. Throttle back and you could have a solid 10kn boat speed in trade wind conditions and with the Wharram Wind Vane steering.

Wet though, like most performance boats at those speeds, so they need a good dodger setup.

Thanks Jmh2002 for that rig info, I always thought it was just any rig that could be found cheaply that was put on a Wharram. Certainly there are some low build cost Wharrams floating around.
I like that Tiki footage, it reminds me of a Tiki 21 that was on the inside of Fraser Island and she just flew past us.
I have seen a capsized Wharram in Wellington Harbour, but that Tiki looks pretty solid in the water.
