Re: Shark attack St Martin..

Seals are devastating the commercial fisheries in New England each eating 10 to 18 pounds of fish per day and are bringing in the sharks to feast.

Re: Shark attack St Martin..

Great Whites are found almost everywhere worldwide. They are common in Maine waters - because of the large seal population. Attacks are rare; as I understand it the woman killed last summer was wearing a wet suit. When I was a child, there was a bounty on seals to reduce the population, which also reduced the number of Great White sightings. Seals are back, so are the Great Whites.

Stop the stupidity. Sharks and crocs do not know aggression, fear, or hope, they don't know anything other than hunger, and that is how they have survived since the age of dinosaurs.

This attack is no different than any other, they just obey the laws of statistics. Wrong place, wrong time. Terrible tragedy and my utmost sympathies to all involved.

It never used to bother me, but as I grow older, I find that I start to worry about attacks by sharks and crocs sometimes when I am in the water or even on my kayak. But I still go, hoping the laws of statistics won't find me.

Re: Shark attack St Martin..

19 years of cruising south pacific solo. Unbelievably I have never seen a shark in the water...lots of dolphins, whales, and on 6-7' diameter sun fish. I sailed right up to it, it never moved, just plain ignored me. I feel lucky to have seen it.
However, in Monterey,ca bay had encounter with two orka's. Came at boat leaving wake and rooster tail, stopped about 6 feet from boat, rolled over and looked at me...I know one was saying to other one, "did you see the look on her face?"....they swam a mile or so away and did it a second time...scared the heck ou t of me.

Learned to pour one shot of best booze over board at dusk for King Neptune, but found out it was permissible to filter thru my kidneys.

Wow, REALLY? I believe you, just surprised.

Years ago we were scuba diving off of Mo'orea and there were TONS of sharks about....harmless reefs and grays. "Harmless" being subjective. That was scuba diving so obviously wouldn't have seen them from a boat.

However, just recently in February we were moored on the west side of Bora Bora. We were swimming around the boat and hanging off the swim ladder...what many do after a day of sailing.

Well, we had JUST climbed back up onto the boat when a huge ass shark surfaced behind us, swam down the starboard side of the yacht, then disappeared. Obviously we never saw it when we were splashing about.

Not to be melodramatic, but this disturbed me. I've always kind of felt secure around the boat.....if you see a shark just climb back onboard. We never saw this shark and it had been close. Probably nothing would've happened had we stayed in the water, but there is a small amount of doubt. Obviously this shark wasn't afraid of humans as many people allege sharks are.

So as to seeing sharks in general. I don't know why but I've seen a fair amount...even in the BVIs, which was surprising. Not big ones, but sharks none the less.

I'm sorry, but I strongly disagree with this age old over-used comparison.

Put a hundred life jacketed people in the ocean in an area where sharks are known to frequent for 12 hours and see what happens.

Can you say USS Indianapolis? JMHO.

Re: Shark attack St Martin..

There are sharks in all waters. Shark attacks are rare but always get huge press headlines.

In Turks and Caicos we saw a 10' Hammerhead in about 7' of water from the dinghy.

I don't worry about the sharks. I worry far more about other drivers on the road. I was invited to dive at the Farrolones off the SF coast. No way. There is a defined Great White shark triangle which this was the outer tip of where the feed and breed. Farralones are a huge seal breeding ground. Guys that were diving there stopped when they saw a great white leap out of the water and pick off a sunning seal on a rock 15' out of the water.

hum, believe in 'animals are stupid and have no emotions' theory ?

I do not subscribe. Have a look at stat and see how many shark attack this year in AUS and you will see is way beyond average. Even though there were beach restrictions.

I remember an experiment where they removed the brain from a shark then put it back in the tank.. it continued swimming and feeding for, (if I remember correctly) 36hrs.

Don't hear many Gunga Din references much in Australia these days. Guess poetry has dropped of the curriculum.

I know that you can gut one and throw it into the water, where it will eat it’s own guts until it bleeds out and dies, I’ve seen it.
I think they have about as much “brain” as a snake.

There are some YouTube videos that depict otherwise.

There are sharks that are territorial, bull's in particular. I saw a video the other day where a shark attacked a diver, bit him on the shoulder in a blatant act of aggression.

The shark displayed all the tells.....fins down, back arched and swimming in fast jerky motions This particular shark made a FAST pass by the diver, then turned around and swam FAST directly at the diver before latching on to his shoulder. The shark BIT, then swam off....he did not try to EAT the diver.

I'm not trying to come off as some kind of expert, however, I've listened to REAL shark experts that disagree with your statement.
