Agreed! Those who should hold out the most hope seem to have given up hope!

Re: Sailor Lost Contact SV Celebration (Pacific)

Well, it is they who had the last contact with the missing vessel. There may be something about that contact that we know nothing about. It is a long time from March to late August. I suspect they want to tie up as much of their loose ends as they can and get on with their lives.

Landlubbers don't really get how someone can be out of contact for so long, it's no longer part of the sailing culture... There was some conjecture earlier in this thread that he was low on water and possibly hallucinating, at the time of the last contact; perhaps that has influenced their thinking.

Although, at least in Calif., someone had to be disappeared for 5 yrs. before legally declaring them dead........

I'm feeling pretty sure the memorial service is for some emotional closure for the ones left behind. And, yes, it would be wonderful if Rich shows up alive and well.

. But we’ll always return to this: maybe Dad wasn’t experienced enough to chase his goal, but he had to try or he’d die wondering, resenting his own life. It’s hard to say that anyone should die this way. But the question remains: If you have a lifelong dream, and time is running out, what would you do?
