One piece of
advice to the OP is to make sure the
outhaul tension is present when unfurling. Otherwise, unspooling the sail can bunch it up in the
mast.
Vertical battens can catch. For my Selden
furling mast (which is common), the manual recommends being on a starboard tack, slightly off the
wind, because the battens don't have as much of an angle to slip over as they would on a port tack.
Other than that, there are several types of mechanisms out there, so step 1 is
learning what make and model your
furling set up is.
Step 2. Try to find a manual. My manual has
parts diagrams, use instructions, tips, etc.
Without a manual, you have a bit more
work to figure out your system. After step 1 you can try to find someone with the same system to help you. Or
Google etc.
