TLDR, unregistered EPIRB set off, nearest vessels diverted, found sailboat on fire, took off crew.

Will be quite interesting to learn (if we ever do) the details on the fire.

The vessel POESTERD (MMSI 261003696) is a Sailing vessel and currently sailing under the flag of Poland.

They have several such tanker vessels on the Atlantic trade for orange juice:
Orange Wave IMO 9057123 1993

Orange Blossom 2 IMO 9675406 2014

and they hold upwards of 35,000 tonnes.
Presumably it's big business.

What will happen if I activate my unregistered beacon?
Answer: Because the beacon is unregistered the RCCNZ operational staff will have to undertake additional checking and efforts to establish that the beacon is in fact not being activated inadvertently. These additional checks take time and consequently the response to your situation will be delayed.

The beacon doesn't know it isn't registered, so when you turn it on it does its job.

This incident occurred 400 miles from Puerto Rico, well within aircraft range, but I note that the response was to divert nearby vessels. I would be curious to know if part of that decision tree is not knowing anything about the (unregistered) beacon/user/owner?

Looks like in the one photo you can see flames on the hull at the edges of the smoke, at that point not much chance of putting it out. A nightmare I have.
