Re: Mouth of Columbia river rescue today

No kidding! That guy is really lucky. Just had a look at Windy re the wind speeds there this morning ... same storm as pounded us this afternoon. A 35ft high windage power boat into a gale over the bar ... insane.

What a super job by the recent CG grad!

Glad all came out okay, except the boat. Poor boat, not its fault someone chose to go out in that.

Golly.

It appears that the boat was stolen and the man the CG saved and took to the hospital for a checkup, then let go, was wanted by police. https://www.king5.com/article/news/c...ibextid=Zxz2cZ

Coast Guard Rescue Video on Columbia River - Capsize

This was a pretty close call. Apparently the guy on the boat made it and so did the rescue swimmer.

Doesn’t look like the best of day is to be moving a boat.

Based on the discussion over on TF, that's the case. He had arrest warrants in Canada and the boat was stolen. USCG and local police didn't know either until after he had left the hospital.

I'm honestly impressed how well that boat held up to a roll. As best I can determine, it's an Ocean Alexander 460, so a semi displacement coastal boat likely with no ballast. Everything above the decks got stripped off in the roll. Aft hardtop, bimini, contents of the fly bridge, etc. were all gone.

But the boat rolled all the way through and came up floating. Didn't even have a full load of water in the cockpit. I would have expected blown out windows and severe flooding on that boat. And that's not accounting for damage caused by heavy equipment breaking loose in the roll.

Here's the rest of the story. https://katu.com/news/local/watch-us...tment-station-

Apparently the boat was stolen and the guy on the boat was the deranged thief.

Yup, the guy had arrest warrants in Canada and the boat was stolen. Neither was known at the time of rescue.

There's another thread on this running with a bit more content: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ay-272683.html

Re: Mouth of Columbia river rescue by USCG

Lot more detail than the original story ... "explains" why it was out there. Did the idiot think he was making it back to Canada? And a real baptism for the USCG swimmer too !!
