Re: Miami - Strategy for Sailboat

The La Belle place looks interesting, if not full. Too bad no mangroves for protection, but not too much houses and whatnot.

After stripping the boat, really do up the anti-chafing gear. Hope the boat has good backing plates for its cleats.

Good luck and thanks for sharing.

Ann

Thanks Ann !! Will apply plenty of firehose.

To your cleat question fortunately the yacht was built under LR Certification.

We have cleared Okeechobee. Hope these aren't too many photos as here is another one.

Not too many photos at all, I'd liked to see your final prep (lines/anchors) and location (gps), maybe even pics of surroundings/other boats nearby.

Hate to admit, but I would rather be dodging hurricanes then sitting in the office. A little jealous, in a good way. Good luck,

You have received excellent advice and made excellent decisions so far. But don't stay on the boat get GF to pick y'all up! Trust me you will regret it if you don't! Once the storm is on you there is nothing you can do but wish you had not stayed!
Wish you all the best!

Re: Miami - Strategy for Sailboat

We are out and into caloosahatchee so thankful for that. GF, crew member and his dog, yacht and car all on one place now. Would not have happened without 24 hour CF support over last 3 days and cooperation of so many who helped is in person along the way. Several marine services folks making it a point of pride "these are our regular prices."

Enough about us.

Many people in Miami are in low quality cinderblock buildings and/or low elevation.

If Miami is actually in path of the largest hurricane even then NOW is obviously the time to declare EMINENT DOMAIN on ALL hurricane rated buildings in Miami.

Private buildings apt hotel whatever likely to survive should be seized, temporarily, and turned into public shelters.

Governor, you are saying "we can't help you." Actually you can by reviewing this and take action if it will save lives.

Some buildings will probably open on their own.

Don't get caught Osteening.

Under consideration once path finalizes. All options on table next 36 hours. You all stay safe as well if you are on the Florida dangle like we are.

Matt this timely post saved us time and kept us moving. THANK YOU.

And your inlet talk in was so on point that, given your suggestion around post 52, I was able to cross inlet of my list of concerns. You took it do something that had 25% of my focus down to 0. This allowed me to focus on the many other issues at a critical time, while underway, limited sleep. I'm probably going to wear out the T key on my smart phone. TTTTThank You Matt.

As I understand it, bridges may accelerate the wind.

As Ron White so adequately put it in his comedy routine ”It’s not that the wind is blowing but what the wind is blowing”.

I understand your concern for the boat, BUT!

Visualize this – You and crew are inside the boat in the height of the storm. The rig sounds like a gang of demons are swinging in the rig with a God awful howl that will make your hair stand on end! Every couple seconds something, it may be small it may be large, slams into the rig or the hull which adds to the howl, you jump every time! You feel like you have to go check the lines for chafe and as you crawl along the deck the pine straw hitting you feels like spears. That was my experience in a degraded cat1 to tropical storm up river. Multiply that times 100 I would guess and that is what you’re looking forward to. I’m convinced that I will never do that again. There is nothing you can do but hold on and wished you had left. You can get back quick enough after the storm. After Katrina, we had aerial Photos on the web within a couple days that allowed us to confirm that our boat had sank in our hurricane hole. I’m sure there will be photos of your area as well. Prepare it the best you can and get to a safe place.

This monster is coming right at you. Don’t give it another thought to riding it out, you will regret it! Good luck!

Re: Miami - Strategy for Sailboat

Both recent runs of GFS model and Euro model are moving it closer to the west coast at least for the initial landfall.
