Everybody is right.
Fort Bragg, California is currently a city. (was a military base a LONG time ago)
Fort Bragg, North Carolina is currently a military base.
They were both named after the same guy.

Sorry, there are 2 Ft Braggs, the one of interest right now is on the N coast of California, an easy motorcycle ride from my home in Napa.

Cheers

I don't feel you are picking on or piling on. I am just challenging what seems like some selective of choosing of the stories to match the theory. I don't see any significant difference between the written accounts by both of them.

When someone is 180 miles offshore and activates an Eprib they have zero assurance as to what type of help will arrive. Focusing on the hope that a pump would arrive and solve the problem does nothing to.diminish the concern that they had for the steering. As in almost all accidents it is the sum of the issues, not one individual issue that paints the picture.

Ft Bragg (CA) is also home to the Skunk Train, a steamer which, unlike the one in Back To the Future, can't get from North Carolina to Willits CA and back in a couple of hours.
It's also home to Noyo harbor where Goldie Hawn fell overboard.
Not to mention North Coast Brewery -Old Rasputin Ale.
And the Abalone Festival.
You really should get out more

I use dyneema preventers on the main boom and have caught them on the hatch before. It is one of the downsides to using smaller diameter lines.
In this case I'm not to clear how the dinghy from bow could get that far aft.

I think I need to stop sneering in jealousy at those super-fancy flush hatches. I know Lewmar makes a flush-mount version, but it looks like it has similar weak dogs. I was more impressed with a recent flush model I saw on a teak deck that had hefty aluminum dogs. I think it was a "Solimar" brand? (not overly impressed with its hinges, though)

As mentioned above, the Atkins Hoyle hatches look a lot more substantial. For the size of hatches I need they are 3 times the price of Lewmar Oceans

On my hatches, the aluminum rivets that hold the catches to the frame is the weak link, especially after a few decades of corrosion.
However they are easily drilled out and replaced with SS screws.

Sorry about the Ft Bragg, when you say Ft, I think of the military installation.
as far as getting out more, I've been to California, went to a class at Alameda.
I didn't lose anything there.

Re: Loss of KELAERIN Rescue of Crew June 2018

I imagine that the forces exerted by a sheet or whatever getting under the lip of a Lewmar hatch in these conditions would be more than enough to break it open...

Check this .. https://www.lewmar.com/node/14555 ..

A pair of 'catch blocks' and two pop rivets ( right hand side of pic ) is all that is keeping your hatch shut.

Memo to self... duct tape around lip of hatches to close the gap next time going offshore....

The age old idea of having big solid U Bolts in your hatches to lash them closed from the inside makes sense for those hatches with flimsy plastic dogs.

I sometimes wonder what internal forces happen in a rollover or severe knockdown. There may be times when the presure is outwards, rather than inwards, popping hatches and windows.

I have AH hatches and ports in the small boat. Really, really nice. Probably double the value of the boat.

Good news is that a mono after rollover, stoved in hatches, no one manning the wheel and plenty of water on board will potter around the ocean for another 4 or 5 weeks unattended.
Seems there is no urgency to upgrade your hatches
