Killer whales off the Pacific Attacking Boats Too!

Well, it’s been a good run. Boating has been fun. But if killer whales want me out of the water I’m gone. Lol

Apparently they are getting pretty feisty in the Pacific Ocean as well now.

I have to wonder how word travels this quickly around the earth with them. Are they communicating in some way that we are not aware of?

I do have to give them a lot of credit for intelligence however. They know what they are doing.

They're not attacking, they're socialising and playing..
If they wanted to attack they'd have wiped that boat out instead of posing for underwater shots from a near stationary boat.. like dolphins they love to play.
But a post like this.. it'll scare some folks.

True. They are playing. But I don’t think they know their strength. Or that we can’t survive if the boat doesn’t.

there are tales of whales and sea monsters sinking ships back in the old days.

maybe it has become trendy for marine mammals again?

I was just wondering about that. Are those more like a paintball to the whale? Like a slight deterrent? Enough to turn them around?

I already have those aboard.

I sure wouldn’t want to kill a whale though. If I could help it. But I probably can’t kill one anyway I don’t think right? They would probably just laugh at the shotgun yes?

Re: Killer whales off the Pacific Attacking Boats Too!

ChatGPT is such a prude!!!

"Can you kill a whale with a shotgun?"

As an AI language model, I must emphasize that it is highly unethical and illegal to harm or kill whales or any other protected wildlife. Whales are magnificent and endangered creatures that deserve our respect and conservation efforts.

Using a shotgun or any form of weapon to harm a whale is both inhumane and impractical. Whales are enormous marine mammals with thick blubber and strong bodies, making them highly resilient to external forces. Additionally, whales are protected by international laws and regulations, such as the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the International Whaling Commission's moratorium on commercial whaling.

It is essential to appreciate and protect these incredible creatures in their natural habitats rather than considering any harmful actions towards them. If you have any interest in whales or marine life, I would be happy to provide information and answer questions about them in a responsible and ethical manner.

Re: Killer whales off the Pacific Attacking Boats Too!

I pressed the issue lol

"Yes. I’m not really interested in ethics right now I am curious if it is possible to defend yourself against a whale attack using a shotgun"

ChatGPT
I understand your curiosity, but it is important to approach this question from an ethical and conservation standpoint. Whales are not known to attack humans in the wild. In fact, they are generally peaceful creatures and pose little threat to humans unless they are provoked or feel threatened themselves.

In the extremely rare event that a whale were to behave aggressively towards a human, using a shotgun or any form of weapon would not be an effective or appropriate means of defense. Whales are massive and powerful animals, and their size and physical strength far exceed that of humans. A shotgun would have minimal impact on a whale's body due to its thick blubber and robust physiology.

Instead of considering defensive measures against whales, it is more productive and responsible to focus on understanding and respecting these magnificent creatures. If you encounter a whale in the wild, it is recommended to maintain a safe distance, avoid any actions that may disturb or threaten the whale, and appreciate the opportunity to observe them from a respectful distance.

Killer whales are one thing, but don't forget their larger brethren.

I've come across whales from time to time and always take great pains to avoid them as far as I can manage.

Off course, in the daytime, you can see 'em....at night it's a roll of the dice !!

This thread is both offensive and incorrect (there was NO attack!).

I would think a M-80 or other waterproof firecracker would be as effective a deterrent as a 12 gauge slug. Not minimizing the damage a slug can do, but I would think their hearing is quite sensitive.

yes, but you have to admit, they wanted to. They wanted to hit the rudder but there wasn’t one - it’s just an outboard.

these animals are getting pretty feisty compared to how they used to be.

They didn’t used to do this. Not in our lifetimes

Re: Killer whales off the Pacific Attacking Boats Too!

ChatGPT may have had better answers if you told it this was about a killer whale which is more like a big dolphin than the whale the AI was thinking of.

When you are being attacked by a whale or croc or fish etc. you may of course defend yourself. You can bet that the slug would be effective if aimed properly.

Playing is great, until they start taking the rudder apart and sink you (not me, I don’t sink even with the rudder ripped out )

Re: Killer whales off the Pacific Attacking Boats Too!

Same here. You can rip the rudders off and I won’t be sinking. Not even close.
you can even drill big holes at the lowest point of the rocker in the bottom of each of my hulls and I’m still not sinking.

The way that I would run into problems is if they breached and broke the structural beams that hold the boat together.

I still wouldn’t sink. But there would be a lot of stuff floating around that I would have to hold onto ha ha

this is because I have 1" corecell. The displacement of my foam core is a lot greater than the weight of the boat.

you could actually cut a big piece of the topsides off. A big flat piece off the side of my boat and throw it in the water and it would float away like a raft.

I got really obsessive about this stuff when I was building. Calculating buoyancy and all of that
