Re: Kevin O’Leary wife driving boat in fatal accident

Police say the fatal collision involved two boats — a smaller ski boat that can tow water skiers, and a larger, 13-occupant wakeboard pleasure craft.
The collision happened around 11:30 p.m. on Lake Joseph near Emerald Island in Seguin Township, a destination in the region about 215 kilometres north of downtown Toronto.
Police say two people died: Gary Poltash, 64, from Florida, and Susanne Brito, 48, from Uxbridge, Ont.
Three other people who were on the boats were also injured, police said. The three people were treated and released from hospital.
The provincial police say the criminal investigations branch is now heading up the investigation.
Police have not said who was driving, but O'Leary maintains he wasn't.
In his statement, O'Leary said the other boat did not have its navigation lights on and "fled the scene."
Police would not comment on the navigation lights. But other information they provided seemed to contradict O'Leary's claim the other boat "fled."
Evidently, police received calls from people aboard each boat, and both boats involved in the collision "left the scene to seek medical attention."
Investigators have not said whether or not speed or alcohol were factors.

Charges laid on both sides - be interesting to see how this plays out: Kevin O'Leary's wife charged in boat crash that left two dead, three injured

Note that federal charges were filed against the driver of the boat with lights on, not the boat with lights off. Is this some kind of Deep Pockets thing? The story at the link leaves a lot of questions.

Sounds like good politicking.

“No lights “ should trump everything. But why waste a good tragedy?

Re: Kevin O’Leary wife driving boat in fatal accident

Don't have enough info, but they were going 19mph I think they said? Maybe it was in an area unsafe to operate at that speed and size of vessel? Also if the other boat was struck full enough to kill two passangers onboard, I question Kevin's original statement that it ran for the hills afterward. You would think it would be damaged enough to not really be able to do that, no?

If I had a boat load of dead and injured people I'd probably "run for the hills" towards the nearest medical attention.

I did think of that, but just thought it had to be a hell of an impact to do that....

Re: Kevin O’Leary wife driving boat in fatal accident

I am trying to think of possible scenarios , I just looked at emerald island on google earth. It is not in a particularly hard to navigate area . I wonder if the boat with no lights was moving or not . Perhaps she was charged because if the other boat had ,its lights on it would have had the right of way and that trumps the no lights issue ,at the time . Sad for everyone

Not everything is reflected through a political lens, at least not in Canada.

It is everyone’s duty to do what they can to avoid a collision. The Colregs require proper lighting on a boat at night, but they also demand proper piloting and operation. Linda O’Leary has been charged with careless operation of a vessel. Clearly the police believe there is sufficient evidence here. The courts will decide.

Re: Kevin O’Leary wife driving boat in fatal accident

Sometimes (usually?) when a celebrity is involved in a fatal accident the police will refer the case to the justice system so as to better insure transparency. It may or may not be that the police are 100% sure she is at fault. We should wait for the process to complete and then look at what is publicly released. I hope in today’s world we would all do that before jumping to conclusions.

Re: Kevin O’Leary wife driving boat in fatal accident

One report I read said that she was driving at "!7 mph" which was determined to be excessive speed.

I think it's crazy to pilot a boat at night at high speed, but I'm not sure I think 17 mph is high speed.

All of these news articles seem to deliberately only bother to gather half the information you need to figure out what happened.

So true. I think it’s really b/c there isn’t full information available yet, so instead of reporting the facts, we start getting all the speculation, and opinion and “analysis” which then passes for actual news. Sometimes there is no news. Sometimes we just have to wait.

The police have done their job. Now the judicial system will make the determination. Patience...
