I was in Thailand that year ,did the rally the year before, the rumour mill was the crew murdered the skipper, of course there was no proof as the article points out.

It's a very sad story, both of the death and of the uncertainty left with the daughter who will never have a conclusive explanation, only a best bet.

Buried within it is that boats DO disappear, and that being far from anywhere that disappearance does not become news nor is there anyone charged with doing an investigation.

This is a very interesting story. It will be interesting to see if they ever find the lost boat and if they do, see what they find in particular with regards to open thruhulls, portholes, etc.

It would seem unlikely that Mr.Guillaume would be found swimming in the ocean if he sunk the boat, or if he had arranged for it to be hauled off someplace. As mentioned, he was nearly dead when found. That alone should absolve him of any guilt.
Impossible to say what happened to the boat to make it sink without seeing the damage, but being a metal boat, if it came in contact with something, something fell off, or opened up, it would sink quickly.

I would hazard a guess that the mention of the portal letting in water was secondary to the real reason water was entering the boat. More likely something underneath, and it had filled up a good portion of the cabin before anyone noticed, then it was too late to get a distress signal out. Tragic ending all around.
I hope one day they can find that boat and reveal the reasons. RIP.
