Unfortunately this is probably going to be one of our biggest defense screw ups.

In my opinion we should have evolved the diesel electric Collins class subs with an ongoing build and evolve program and bought six French nuclear subs rather than redesigning nuclear subs as diesel electric. There's nothing wrong with French defense technology and we would have then had both good long range, deep ocean and coastal defense subs.

Re: Invisible Force Sinks Sub

Koh Swee Lean of the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (at Nanyang Technological U in Singapore) argues the incident with KRI Nanggala demonstrates the need for Indonesia, and any navy operating submarines, to invest in infrastructure including emergency response capacity.

In the western Pacific, Koh reports only China, Japan, Republican Korea, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Viet Nam have emergency response capacity.

Indonesia and Viet Nam have each signed agreements with Singapore for submarine emergency response. Distance and time are crucial factors. Viet Nam now has its own submarine rescue vessel.

Apologies. I wanted to convey that it was not just the PSI, but I guess I didn't know the right term. Thank you.

EDIT: How's this?

Invisible forces? I'm guessing they would be the watery equivalent to wind shear and microbursts.
Speaking of which you don't see 'drop bear ' rachas - as opposed to 'line rachas' - coming.

German submarines? The Argentines lost one in mysterious circumstances in '17 or '18. A bit younger than this one.

I would just about have to agree with this. Shift the blame.

Re: Invisible Force Sinks Sub

True. Diesel electric boats are still being built. They have a small advantage over nucs. They can be VERY quiet on the battery. The Soviet Foxtrots were always a threat to us in the old days. Slow but really quiet. Many were sold to other countries everywhere. Other countries build (and sell) them now.
And welding is far superior to riveted seams. In the Navy, submarine hulls and all their stiffeners are welded. Hull material was HY-80 steel over an inch thick. Newer boat may have later innovation steel. All hull weldings are inspected using radioactive sources to see inside those welds. Super strong with the stiffeners inside.

Re: Invisible Force Sinks Sub

Of interest in the article is the concept of large scale currents with a vertical component sufficient to carry a sub to a crush depth. Do currents of this scale exist and are they a result of tidal deep ocean tidal current and geography? Does the US Navy worry about such a phenomenon?

I have read accounts of divers being forced deep by currents near seamounts and islands. Several divers have been lost through the years because of these currents. However, as a great lakes diver this type of risk is not on the list.
