Re: Hokusai Size Waves Predicted 56ft or 17 meters

When it is said a wave is X number of feet high, are those measurements taken from trough to crest, from the median sea level or where

Wave height is measured by scientific instruments (Buoys or satellites) or estimated by human observation.

The Wave Height is from Trough to Crest.

There are several good informative articles on Wikipedia related to waves. Also read about Significant Wave Height, a very important concept for every sailor to understand.

Hope that helps.

Re: Hokusai Size Waves Predicted 56ft or 17 meters

I titled this thread "Hokusai Size Waves.." for reasons I explained up above.

The World Meterological Organization has a ranking of Sea States that are used, like a Beaufort Scale, to describe wave heights at sea. They match another scale called the Douglas Sea State Scale.

The predicted waves of this storm would be called:

Sea State 9 Phenomenal 14+ meters

Phenomenal

So, when you hear a mariner or sailor or oceanographer describing the sea state or waves they experienced as "phenomenal" they may not be exaggerating or using hyperbole, they may be using the accurate and official term.

Re: Hokusai Size Waves Predicted 56ft or 17 meters

While living in Guam....immediately following the hurricane that blew at close to 160mph...we all felt the ground shudder under our feet as the giant comers hit the point near the naval air station. They were incredibly beautiful. I can't even remember how big. That was back in 1970-1971. Sunk military ships that were in the harbor behind sea walls. I can't even imagine what it would do to a private small yacht. But i think of a cat inside a dryer while clothing is drying would be what it would be like.

I do believe waves are measured from trough to crest on the Back side of the wave ,,,not the face.

If you have links to reports or photos of those waves, please post in this thread. It would be good to have more illustrations.

I do believe that the Captain of one of the QE's reported a wave level with his bridge (90 feet) off the NE coast of the USA a few years ago

Hokusai was not exaggerating.

Re: Hokusai Size Waves Predicted 56ft or 17 meters

Just a few days ago, a sea buoy off the coast of Oregon recorded a wave of 60 feet, and several hours of 50 foot or higher waves.

That shows that Hokusai Size waves (Phenomenal waves) are out there.

More info here in another thread I started on the topic.

Re: Hokusai Size Waves Predicted 56ft or 17 meters

Recent (January 18, 2018) waves off Oregon reached 60 feet! Truly "phenomenal" (and Hokusai Size).

This illustration gives us a good idea of what a 60 foot wave would look like in height. Scale matters.
