Greenland Tsunami Shook the Earth, for Nine Days [Sept. 2023]
According to new research [1], a large rockslide occurred, in Dickson Fjord, Greenland, on 16 September 2023, that generated a local 200-meter-high tsunami.
The event was energetic enough to generate a global 10.88-millihertz (92-second) monochromatic very-long-period (VLP) seismic signal, that resonated for 9 days.
That section of the fjord has steep parallel sides, only 10 kilometres apart, which allowed the standing waves to oscillate, back and forth, off the opposite shores. Additionally, the long valley has bends at both ends, of the straight section, so the energy, in the
water, had nowhere to escape.
In their study
[1], the researchers suggest that, the landslide may have been caused by a glacier, in the fjord below, becoming thinner, due to climate change, and unable to hold back the steep sides of the valley.
The
Greenland ice sheet is the second largest on the planet, after Antarctica, and it is losing ice at an accelerating rate. In a NASA study
[2], from January, 179 out of 207 glaciers, in Greenland, retreated significantly, between 1985 and 2020.
