Does your high-water alarm sound in the cockpit?

Does your high-water alarm sound in the cockpit?

They sprung a leak, they're alarm sounded, but they were above deck and didn't hear it.

No, but it does sound in the wheelhouse as does the engine oil pressure, exhaust elbow temp and oil temp.

Should note, those alarms are suitably loud enough to be heard anywhere on the boat and probably from nearby boats as well.

Ours is loud enough that we can hear it.

Ours is actually a car horn. Although it is mounted below it is unmistakably loud in the cockpit.

I am on a trawler, inside steering station. I have high water sensors in the 4 compartments. They tie into 5 inch fire bell via a panel indicating which compartment.

Re: Does your high-water alarm sound in the cockpit?

Ours is ridiculously loud and no problem at all hearing it in the cockpit. In fact before we left to go cruising our primary bilge failed and a neighbor 1 pier over heard the noise and tracked down who was making all the racket. That’s how we discovered we had a leaking holding tank and a y-valve selector failure for one of our heads...right before we where planning to leave for cruising. good times...

But I digress, for our little 40 footer, there is no way you’re missing the high water alarm from anywhere onboard.

That makes no matter. Def Leopard is not allowed on my boat, and even if it was, on my boat no watchstander is allowed to play music. Despite it's name standing "watch" means listening for problems as well as looking for them.

Anything less violates Rule 5 of the ColRegs which states in its entirety:

Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision.

Pretty clear, Yes?

Re: Does your high-water alarm sound in the cockpit?

Our highwater alarm sounds a claxon that can be heard throughout the boat, as well as on deck.

The air horns also sound continuously and can be heard if on shore and in sight of the boat.

There is a mute switch...

Cheers! Bill
