Re: Disney Cruise ship rescues stranded boaters off Bermuda

I used to think it was a little scary when I went below decks while underway (usually to visit the head) and saw that water crashing by the escape hatch. After this thread I think it is a lot scary.

I believe the EU requirements for production cats have been now updated to exclude escape hatches! Having built 3 cats without escape hatches I’m very pleased to see that finally common sense prevailed.

Are these escape hatches all made with a window? The seal is just another point of failure. Why not just a simple dogged hatch, if you just had to have a hatch?

Re: Disney Cruise ship rescues stranded boaters off Bermuda

That CE cert rule was for 12m and longer. Our boat from the factory was 11.97m and I'm very happy Leopard avoided the requirements for this, thus preventing this major failure point.

I'll admit the view is very cool but not worth the risk.

I also understand this rule was removed.

As far as this story goes, it is quite shocking that a bridge deck hatch seal leak could not be slowed enough to save the boat.
Direction of sail, sails plan, speed, cover with towels, sealant, cushions, pillows, people, etc.

I hope we get more information from the captain and crew soon so we can all learn.

No this happened to someone I know.

Crew called mayday over a stalled engine, in good weather.
