Re: Cyber-Security

[QUOTE=GordMay;3464210]For instance, it might apply to "OpenCPN', the Chart Plotter and Navigational software program: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f134/

Well you got me on that one, more affirmation to have paper charts and a sextant.

Call me small minded (I am sure there is a cartoon for that), but I guess I was confused with all of these headlines impacting the average cruiser on this forum. You seem well informed, but maybe the audience for these are more for the tech crowd? I am not the first to comment ...

Perhaps, if you quit banging your head on the wall, you'd be able to see the irony, of complaining about my internet & computer security concerns, by using your computer, on an internet forum.

Add your Samung TVs to the list, if you have not already done so.

https://www.samsung.com/za/support/newsalert/123186/

Now if your TV has a mic/camera/wifi/BT, it will only be when it gets hacked, not if. Track records for a lot of these backdoor features are usually hard coded into the devices, never changed, or worse in plain text with and admin password of "123456".

Empower social-media watchdogs

Earlier last month [Aug 2021], Facebook shut down the accounts of researchers, associated with New York University’s Ad Observatory, a project in which informed volunteers allow study of advertising targeted to their accounts.

Facebook’s heavy-handedness could open a window for research in the public interest, argues media scholar Ethan Zuckerman. He outlines principles that could guarantee researchers access to data under certain conditions — even if it is forbidden by a platform’s terms of service.

Apple issues security patch after Toronto-based Citizen Lab flags vulnerability

Apple released an emergency software patch to fix a security vulnerability that researchers said could allow hackers to directly infect all Apple devices without any user action.

The researchers at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab said the flaw allowed spyware from the world's most infamous hacker-for-hire firm, NSO Group, to directly infect the iPhone of a Saudi activist.

The "zero-click" flaw affected all Apple's operating systems, the researchers said.
