Catalina 30 Missing Off Atlantic Coast

The MidAtlantic USCG has issued an alert for an overdue, missing Catalina 30 Atrevida II, in transit from Cape May, N.J., to Jupiter, FL.

Last seen at Oregon Inlet (not fit for sailboat transit BTW).

Interestingly enough, a former C30 owner opines on the USCG Facebook page that the Catalina 30 is not what sailors call a blue water boat...

Re: Catalina 30 Missing Off Atlantic Coast

Maybe they were inside doing the ICW?

Had a good butt kicking in a well built 56' rounding Diamond Shoals so don't think I would take a C30 around, but that is just me.

Re: Catalina 30 Missing Off Atlantic Coast

The U.S.C.G. has expanded the search from Cape Cod to Florida for these missing boaters, Kevin Hyde, 64, and Joe DiTomasso, 76, and a dog onboard a Catalina 30. They left Utsch's Marina in Cape May and haven't been seen since Dec. 3rd departing Oregon Inlet in N.C.:

Re: Catalina 30 Missing Off Atlantic Coast

I'm hearing initial reports they have been found!

Special internet points for anyone who can guess off which US State they were found (no cheating!).

You have to pick the day.

Beach Cats racing the Worrell 1000 Round the Outer Banks and Cape Hatteras each year that race is held.

They first did it on Hobie 16's then it progressed from there up to the more stable 20' Beach Cats

The most destruction usually occurred trying to get off the beach ..... and then back on the beach at the end of each day

Yep! Little more detail here: https://6abc.com/us-coast-guard-miss...y-nj/12564201/

Quote:
The Coast Guard says the "Atrevida II" was found to be without fuel and power, rendering their radios and navigation equipment inoperable.

Family members tell Action News they were waving a red flag and caught the attention of a nearby tanker around 4:18 p.m. Tuesday. They were evaluated by the vessel's medical staff with no immediate concerns.

Thank god the dog is safe.

Apparently, they were out flares as well.

This is what happens when you rush to catch the early bird special....

Re: Catalina 30 Missing Off Atlantic Coast

Here we are with another multi million dollar search that thankfully ended with them saved. BUT, this needs to be investigated and reported on. You cant just take a small unfit, and unprepared boat out in December to some of the most treacherous waters on the planet without proper preparation. They ended up 220 miles east of Cape May. That is insane.

In all seriousness, speaks volumes about the quality of the Catalina.

Unfortunately, here in the US, there are seldom direct fees for stupidity. Mostly we depend on bodily pain or Darwin’s theory to instill lessons. Which doesn’t do much for the other 99.99% on the sidelines. It is never ending. As someone who spent their professional life rescuing and saving others, I could spend hours sharing experiences of, as I term it, “stupid people doing stupid things”. I am also acutely aware of the great expense behind all of this, having had the responsibility of approving the launching of various resources, including helicopters, and knowing the $$$ figures behind each asset. Many times I wished I could have sent a bill! However, I must note that billing is slowly becoming more common, and there are more agencies billing, especially if an illegal act or blatant negligence is involved. (E.g. trasspass in closed areas, under the influence).

With all due respect, I am glad they were found and rescued. I don’t know their specific circumstances. However, based only on my experience and knowledge, I believe taking a craft of this size out in this area, at this time of year is foolhardy, irrespective of captains experience. Just my opinion of course.

1. S&R would probably be spending time practicing the same moves anyways.

2. Do you really want worries of financial liability on your mind when considering whether to call for help? Do you want some dumb dad on an ill prepared boat drowning his whole family because he was afraid to call for help when he finally realized he was in over his head?

3. About half the people here can't even understand the difference between amp hours and amps, yet they cross oceans on boats relying on electrical systems they can't possibly understand. From my perspective, as an electrical engineer, this is irresponsible. I can't believe I share insurance companies with folks designing their own rigs who don't even know trigonometry. There is always someone smarter than you, are you sure you want some kind of stupidity fee for search and rescues? Be careful what you wish for.
