Car Carrier overturns in Brunswick River, Ga.

However, the new information also states that the ship contained 4,600 tons of fuel, which by my math is over 1 million gallons. We know that’s not right, so there is a LOT of bad information being reported here.

The original salvage team, Donjon/SMIT, removed 320,000 gallons of bunker but could not gain access two tanks which were estimated to contain an additional 30,000 gallons. This remains on board.

Tons is correct,

These ships carry globe circling fuel, they burn tons per hour.

A similar vessel when pressed up carries 3450 cubic meters of Heavy Fuel Oil, this is 911393 gallons.

At the typical specific gravity of heavy fuel oil, these ships carry 3800ish tons of fuel.

Add to that the 210 cubic meters of diesel and the 150 cubic meters of lube oil tankage and you’ve got Over a million gallons of oils.

A 747 burns 10 tons per hour. Carries about 20 tons of fuel.
Ballpark.

Ummmm.....check your numbers. I know I’ve been on a 747 flight longer than 2 hours.

Yep, London to Perth is about 18 hours, must run on fumes for 16 of them.

Global warming solved.

On an aircraft the fuel burn at max thrust and cruising fuel burn at altitude are wildly different.

Two hours at max thrust sounds about right to me as a ball park figure.

Correction
322000 lbs or about 150 tons.
And I’ve been on 14 hour flights on a 747. As I recall. Tokyo to Detroit. In coach. Ugh.
Must have been brain dead when I posted.

I have been on a 400 that lost an engine on rotate out of LAX bound for SYD, we dropped 90 tonnes offshore, returned and the problem was fixed, picked up another 100 tonnes and off we went again. Bloody long day that was.

They're cutting up the car carrier, using a huge cutting chain. Take a look at https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a3...salvage-watch/
