By monohull sail boat standards most big ships are unstable and tend more towards multihull stability mechanisms.

Until they are heeled beyond the angle of vanishing stability, a property of the transverse shape of the vessel, they depend upon the centre of gravity staying below the metacentric height to generate a righting moment. Consequently, unlike a ballasted monohull sail boat the CG is generally well above the centre of bouyancy as with a multihull.

Not surprising..having spent 6 months in Brunswick..this has been a major provider to the economy there.. even the marinas one in particular was deemed ‘essential’ and remained open while others where closed or reduced in providing slips or fuel ‘cause of the mandates by the Gov. of Ga.. I wouldn’t be surprised the the price tag continues to climb..

the ship is one thing...don't forget it was filled with cars...at today's prices, the value of the cars probably amounts to half that amount...

Cars within are not worth the scrap metal.. Their plans are to dump the sawed up sections with all its contents in a disclosed location for a future reef..

Typical bad reporting.

The removal of the overturned Golden Ray in St. Simons Sound, Georgia is likely to top $400 million, according to the insurer handling the claim.

The price tag easily puts the wreck removal as one of the biggest salvage jobs in U.S. history.

...true, the cars inside the carrier at this point are now worthy only as rusty scrap metal, but at one time, they were new, and so any insurance on them would have likely been valued for a "new" car.

From a static stability viewpoint raising the centre of gravity usually decreases the gravity to metacentric which decreases the righting moment.

From a dynamic stability viewpoint increasing the distance between the centre of bouyancy and the centre of gravity appears most likely to increase the moment of inertia and if the vessel is still rolling when it reaches the angle of vanishing stability it's likely to keep going.

This statement is only true if the corresponding change in position of the CoB due to weight removal is less than the corresponding change in CoG due to weight removal.

To increase stability you want to increase the distance between the CoG and CoB. Removing weight from the top decks of the boat will most definitely lower the CoG more than removing weight from lower decks will and in turn increase stability more.
