Re: C&N managed yacht sinks off Sicily, 7 missing
Interesting - if this CCTV video is real why they don't show the actual sinking?
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-captured.html
Still more questions than answers.

Yes, and likely to remain that way until the Marine Investigators have done their stuff. No doubt there will be onboard CCTV media to recoved and examine.

Re: C&N managed yacht sinks off Sicily, 7 missing
Look at the AIS track (if you can find it). I saw it yesterday (should have taken a screen shot) showing the boat swinging around the anchor for an hour or so then breaking away heading SE before ending. Would seem that they lost or let go the anchor and tried to get underway. Hopefully others here have saved that track. Eventually we'll get a full report from the survivors and other investigators. Regardless, it's a terrible tragedy.

Re: C&N managed yacht sinks off Sicily, 7 missing
Current reports from divers is that there is no sign of a hull breach.
Whilst pointing towards open side hatches don't these boats keep them closed due to the air con? It's really warm and humid down there atm (I left 3 weeks ago from nearby and if I had aircon I would prefer it overnight).
Do these boat have water ballast?
In the UK the conspiracy theorists are warming up as Leach's co-defendant was hit by a car yesterday whilst out running and killed.
My heart goes out to the horror of the events for alll those that made it and those that didn't.

On of the comments I read said the ship's AIS was showing a draft of 3.8 meters which matches the specification of the ship when the lifting keel was raised.
It would seem that keel was up, and the keel had to be a heavy to counter balance the 75m mast, which would have a negative affect on the ships stability.

my theory? - the mast snapped some way's up, but not completely, and then swung/pivoted downwards and one of the massive spars pierced the hull.
i can't believe that any bulkheads, windows, doors, portholes would be left open, or would be large enough to pass enough water to sink a boat that large.

My very uninformed guess would be she would normally ride keel DOWN with guests aboard to provide maximum comfort?

Our paltry 40-footer shared an anchorage in the Marquesas with a similar vessel and we were invited aboard for drinks. The aircon was running full blast, the cabin was quite comfortable, and all the hatches (doors really) were wide open. Did not matter to them one bit that that was an expensive way to run air conditioning (we actually discussed it a bit over the drinks).
In a couple of the news stories some of the rescued people have been quoted as saying they came up on deck in the wee hours because of the noise and motion of the storm, which is then likely why they are the survivors, not having been below at the time of the sinking.

Re: C&N managed yacht sinks off Sicily, 7 missing
Thanks. That's pretty clear. They were swinging on the anchor for a long time and then broke away and sank shortly after about 5 min. Still not clear on the cause of the capsize. Time will tell.

Re: C&N managed yacht sinks off Sicily, 7 missing
Others would know better but do you not need to have an AVS of 120 degrees or more even with the keel up to be Cat A rated? Or is that just RCD and different rules apply to boats of this size?

Re: C&N managed yacht sinks off Sicily, 7 missing
Is anybody aware of any records of previous similar incidents of large (sailing) yachts capsizing/sinking at anchor due to storm/water sprouts?

Not a large sailing yacht, but a big passenger boat in Venice Italy:

One would think that would be the case. But look at Nigel1's post with the AIS data. Draft is 3.8 meters.
