BOLO: Ceol Mor - Virginia to NC, SC, GA, FL, Bermuda, Bahamas

This is the husband of a friend and he was single handing Ceol Mor from Virginia to NC around Cape Hatteras late last week on his way to Beaufort, NC. The Coast guard has suspended their search so it's up to us. If you have a boat or are out on a boat, please keep an eye out!!!

It's possible that, due to the weather, he diverted to Bermuda. And ultimately he was on his way to the Bahamas so it's possible he went direct. Or that he continued to South Carolina, Georgia or Florida.

UPDATE: Nov. 25, 2024 - 9 PM - USCG Sector NC has suspended the search for SV Ceol Mor. Please provide any sightings to the nearest USCG.

AT APPROX. 1030Z, SECTOR NORTH CAROLINA RECEIVED A DISTRESS ALERT REGARDING THE S/V CEOL MOR. S/V CEOL MOR IS KNOWN TO BE TRANSITING FROM HAMPTON, VA DOWN TO AROUND BEAUFORT, NC.
S/V CEOL MOR IS A 42 FOOT WHITE SAILING VESSEL WITH BLUE TRIM AND01 PERSONS ON BOARD - MARK CAROLL.

IF FOUND, PLEASE MAKE REPORTS TO SECTOR NORTH CAROLINA
PHONE: +1-910-362-4015

Report is Nov 25th..
Carroll departed from the Norfolk/Hampton area of VA on Thursday evening with the intent to travel south to NC. The Coast Guard said the last communication with the vessel was on Friday evening.
So that means he sailed Nov 21st... last heard from Nov 22nd.. strongest winds were Thurs/Friday 22/23kph from N veering NW after which decreased and went W'ly.

Re: BOLO: Ceol Mor - Virginia to NC, SC, GA, FL, Bermuda, Bahamas

Last comms was with his sister via email, she called the CG. Winds were reported 50 knots by CG. No, I don't know why he opted to leave with a gale brewing around Hatteras. No, I don't know why he purchased a new Epirb but no tracker or PLB. There is a.lot.of back story that might explain his hubris but for now, we are just praying he is found

We have to find Ceol Mor and we are praying that someone, somewhere has seen something.

His children, his mother, his friends and me- his wife just want to find him safe and well. Please, please keep an eye out. We are devastated.

Re: BOLO: Ceol Mor - Virginia to NC, SC, GA, FL, Bermuda, Bahamas

Mimsy,

Please don't worry so soon. i know it doesn't look good from shore. But honestly, what most experienced sailors do, if it gets shitty out there, is to slow or stop the boat, or run off. All of those options take time to recover from and head again for one's destination. if he has EPIRB on board, or other possible notification equipment, I would assume he is okay. One has to respect the skipper's notion if he needs help or not.

It is that being in yucky weather is tiring, and he will be sleeping when/if he can. Some time after he awakens, he will head again for his destination, all being well.

Some people would counsel you to report him missing now, but I would say please give him three or four days at least. It is that involving rescue services can be really humiliating and should only be done if there is a true emergency.

Four days may seem an eternity to you, but as long as he and the boat were well equipped, please give him the chance to come in under his own efforts. I know that will be hard, but it (imo) will serve both of you best.

Warmly,

Ann

Re: BOLO: Ceol Mor - Virginia to NC, SC, GA, FL, Bermuda, Bahamas

Thank you for your kind words Ann. I am a sailor myself, with enough experience that I was counseling the family not to panic. His sister is the one who notified the CG. The search the CG conducted was absolutely thorough from Norfolk, VA to Southport NC.

I am hoping he had to hove to, but the fact that Ceol Mor was not spotted by the CG cutters or planes makes that less likely.

Thank you all for keeping an eye out. The family appreciates it more than we can express.

@Mimsy:

Was the boat equipped with SSB radio? In an emergency, any ham who heard an SOS or a Mayday would answer. Did he have an EPIRB?

Good luck with this, to you and the rest of the family and friends.

Thank you Ann, no SSB.

Communication on board is VHF, Epirb and Starlink.
