I pretty much agree with that. Doesn't have to be a nanny-state, but the economy should serve the needs of the society, and not the other way around.

Development and progress bring more money to people who already own a lot, while destroying the world for everybody. In the same process, by working and consuming as we do, we add our own damage - small on individual scale, but huge once added up.

Awareness of such facts makes me extremely sad.

Re: Are You Troubled ENOUGH ?

As a full time cruiser who essentially lives outside, I don’t need to read a newspaper to get my facts. I am appalled at the state of the environment. The water is dirty, there are practically no birds left, fish are gone, coral reefs are dead. Anyone who denies these clearly visible facts is simply in denial, or maybe just an armchair sailor , sailing the seas of his fancy.

Re: Are You Troubled ENOUGH ?

There are indeed extremely serious environmental issues out there and anyone that calls that fake news has head in sand. I wish it was not true. I hate hearing about it and hate even more when I see clear evidence of it. Like the current set of fires all over the western states, the worst they have ever had.
However, the world wide cruising community is not causing the damage. With few exceptions I find the cruising community plugged in to environmental issues and they are not doing any harm. If anything they are discovering what the world is outside of North America and passing that on to others in a different but credible fashion.

Re: Are You Troubled ENOUGH ?

Yes, most cruisers are wonderful. Typical boaters Leave No Trace 7 principles: 1) trespass through as many paradises as you can get to so you can squander them before others have and they are gone forever; 2) take as souvenirs whatever natural thing you want from wherever you are; 3) kill (and occasionally eat) whatever floats, swims, or crawls about in or on the sea; 4) maximize your material possessions to the point that you are outlandishly pretentious; 5) consume without regard for anything except your own self indulgence and self interest; 6) do not let concerns for energy consumption or waste production dampen your pursuit of any personal pleasures; 7) dump your garbage and sewage overboard wherever you happen to be, you will be moving in soon enough so what do you care.

Re: Are You Troubled ENOUGH ?

Ahoy! This information about the degradation of the environment is not "fake news". Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida has really gone down hill from the fertilizers and sewage flowing into it. There was a recent great fish die-off from lack of oxygen in the bay.
Humans and their lack of concern for nature are the cause. Turning a blind eye or calling it fake are not going to make it any better.
I am sure it is not just happening in Florida.

Until you solve the China/India problem - you solve very little. For some reason these "developing nations" get a pass. How often are we told USA needs to "go green"...

How many coal plants are there in the world today?

The EU has 468 - building 27 more... Total 495

Turkey has 56 - building 93 more... Total 149

South Africa has 79 - building 24 more... Total 103

India has 589 - building 446 more... Total 1035

Philippines has 19 - building 60 more... Total 79

South Korea has 58 - building 26 more... Total 84

Japan has 90 - building 45 more... Total 135

China has 2,363 - building 1,171 more... Total 3,534

That's 5,615 projected coal powered plants in just
8 countries.

USA has 241 - building 0 more...Total 241

Re: Are You Troubled ENOUGH ?

I wonder why so many people in the US are so emotionally invested in protecting the rights of corporations to keep destroying the environment. Do they all own chemical factories? Do they all derive most of their income from oil wells? I don't get it. Why keep repeating corporate propaganda? What's in it for them?

This doesn't happen in other countries that I am familiar with. For example, when I am in France, I am constantly amazed at how clean the water is, even near big cities like Montpellier in the south of France, which has been occupied for thousands of years. And in most places, you can just pick your own mussels or other shell fish and not fear for your life. We are currently sailing in Maine -- the most pristine state on the US east coast -- and you are not able to harvest mussels in most of the state. The water is too polluted. Oh, and there are practically no mussels left, anyway. The Chesapeake is a desert, with the oyster population down 99% from the Chesapeake's heyday.

What is the difference? Normal people have not been brainwashed into thinking that large-scale polluting is 'normal' and something that must be continued for civilization to survive.

A little common sense can go a long way, if you just stop to think.

Because its used as deflection from those who are producing all the plastics and fossil fuel waste, and dumping it onto people in the form of "you need to reduce your personal carbon footprint"

Want to do something constructive? Stop buying crap you don't need from companies that aren't doing you or the planet any favours

These are the top 10 companies that are producing plastic waste. Simply stop using their products:

  1. Coca-Cola
  2. PepsiCo
  3. Nestlé
  4. Danone
  5. Mondelez International
  6. Procter & Gamble
  7. Unilever
  8. Perfetti van Melle
  9. Mars Incorporated
  10. Colgate-Palmolive

At PragerU:
Fossil fuels are the Greenest Energy ➥ https://www.prageru.com/video/fossil...eenest-energy/
Man-made climate change is debatable ➥ https://www.prageru.com/playlist/wha...limate-change/

And many more extreme right doctrines covering most divisive national issues in the United States today: racism, sexism, income inequality, gun ownership, Islam, immigration, Israel, and free speech, etc.

Are there any articles there about ice cream being the healthiest food you can eat? I sure hope so!

Re: Are You Troubled ENOUGH ?

A critic of PragerU and why its an unreliable source of information, uses logical fallacies and cherry picks data.

NASA: "Do scientists agree on climate change?"
NASA: "Scientific Consensus"

If you are going to get all your information from only one source, it would be the dumbest choice to make it one run by an 72 year old ultra conservative with an established agenda to concert people to ultra conservatism with an added slice of American exceptionalism.

All one can do is express concern, try to influence things locally, and to at least keep one's own corner of the world as clean and low-impact as they can.
Yes, well enough. We must strive to make the world easier to live in for all, but do be careful what you ask for. I’m not as privileged as most cruisers, but people from these “privileged western countries” have done a great deal to create a world that supports billions of hungry people, with less desperation, less hunger and less lawlessness and violence than at any time in human civilization. That’s a low hurdle, but important nonetheless. Civilization can and will continue to improve, in part with the help of people who care as you do, but disrupt the process and motivations of work and wealth creation and watch several billion starve and then watch the desperate pursue self-interest in a far more destructive manner.
