Spot on! The same as a bicycle tire pump. If your trunk and legs are fixed and your elbows flex, you will tire quickly. If you hold your arms fixed, get your center of gravity over the pump, and flex your knees, you can pump a lot longer.

Yeah nice but I'd let the bilge pump handle the pumping while I worked the problem.

Sold that boat in 1979 and the only leak was the normal packing gland drip. Which has nothing to do with the amount of effort to pump a gusher 30.

Another Cape Hatteras Rescue

[QUOTE=lestersails;3718643]Good news on the lost boat in the news clip from Chotu in post #92. Found >200 miles off the coast.

This original from #92 cites a Catalina 30, the article above is a 46 footer?
Wonder if there are 2 boats or just incorrect reporting? I assume 2 boats as the below updated from post 92 was all the way near NY

Malbert - you are 100% correct. The link I sent was for a different boat. But if you go back to post 92 and click on the link, the story that he originally cited is gone and there is a rescue story now at that same link. Thanks for the correction!

Somewhere in that thread are a few answers one way or the other.

Yeah the Catalina 30 voyage seems inadvisable- no EPIRB, they were dismasted and drifting 200 miles offshore. North Atlantic in late fall is no joke. They should have been going inside.

You are a kind person. "Inadvisable" is a very generous and forgiving verb for what appears to be what happened here!

Nice.

My Good Old Boat has no packing gland or stuffing box since I removed the diesel so only have small leaks come from the rain or very heavy seas which is why I still haven't rebuilt my manual pump.

Bilge pump will run maybe once a month or so.

Still need to replace the diaphragm in my manual pump. The PO left one onboard though so I'll try that one first

I wonder how old the wire was on that Catalina 30? My guess is it was old but "looked good"...
